Scandalous Women of the Ton trilogy. Mistress by Midnight. One Wicked Sin. Author’s Note. One Wicked Sin is Lottie’s story. A few years ago I was reading a book about the Battle of Trafalgar when a small note at the bottom of the page caught my eye. It referred to the Napoleonic prisoners of war on parole in the small town of Tiverton in Devon. A sophisticated woman of the world, the veteran of many love affairs, Lottie finds that her life falls apart when her husband divorces her. A future as the mistress of a renegade Irish prisoner of war seems her only hope.

This is the second of the series and a return of an old friend, Capt. Purchase. The jacket gives a good outline of the plot, but this particular book breaks from the more traditional role and focuses upon the characters of Lottie and Ethan. One could almost substitute and war and the setting - i.e. Antietam instead of Trafagar, Normany Beach rather than Fuentes de Onoro and the story of Lottie and Ethan would still fit. The plot sets up the choices each has to make and the writer skillfully takes the reader down the path of those choices as her characters struggle, to explain the whys, wherefores and consequences of each choice and action.
The writing is a bit too good in some cases to make it a great read. Lottie and Ethan and two people who have been "broken" as children and although they manage to patch their lives together, situations continue to "break" them until they are bare shells of who they once where; their souls buried so deep behind walls and locks that they seem forgotten.
If the reader is fortunate enough to have never been "broken" this book is still good but may make the reader feel a bit uncomfortable in places.[ The sex is really good!] If the reader is one of those who has been emotionally "broken" and is trying to put themselves back together, this book may offer some sound clues to protect oneself in the future and some hope. If the reader is an emotional cynic, and has "broken" repeatedly, falling into the trap of finding someone who is also broken and trying to fix them, but ends up getting "broken" again - this may not be a good book to read. If the reader is like me, and was broken but found her Ethan- this is a great book and the dynamics of the struggle to trust was pretty much on the money for me. If I didn't know better I would have swore the author has "been there-done that" with this story. I suspect that she probably did the responsible thing and spoke to those "in the know" to get the quality of the characters correctly.

I thought this second book in the trilogy was very enjoyable, This trilogy of books is the first time I have read this author. The books were easy to read and I would recommend Nicola Cornick on the whole as an author.

The ever increasing length of my "Romance Novels I Am Alleged to Have Read" Listmania List is making it harder and harder for me to deny a certain fondness for the romance novel genre, but I took pride in the fact that I had never stooped to the level of reading a Regency Romance...

until now. The truth was that the very thought of spending a few hours immersed in the amorous and adulterous antics of arrogant aristocrats made me want to hurl...

the book against the wall. However, Nicola Cornick found my weak spot:

history... because no matter how dull I found the idea of drawing room decadence, there were some very interesting things going on in the world of the Regency, the Napoleonic Wars for example, and Ms. Cornick based this novel upon a nearly forgotten but astonishingly audacious plan to win the war for Napoleon at a single stroke by taking advantage of a historical oddity of that (somewhat) more honorable age.

Louise Cummings is the astonishment of the Ton, a scarlet woman who has fallen further and faster than she or anyone else would ever have dreamed possible. From wife of a fabulously wealthy banker who could pick and choose her lovers from the crowd clamoring after her to poverty stricken prostitute learning to her horror that she lacks the stomach for it after all, Louise is facing starvation on the streets if she cannot quickly master making a (scant) living on her back when a savior of sorts appears, Ethan Ryder, renegade Irish illegitimate son of a duke and French POW who offers to pay her well to be his mistress and accompany him back to the rural hamlet where he whiles away his parole. Yet though they surprise themselves with the level of lust (and maybe something more?) they inspire in each other, they know better than to trust each other (or anyone else for that matter). Ethan it seems wants the most scandalous woman in London as his mistress in order to distract attention from what he is up to, and the British government it seems would like Louise to find out just exactly what he is up to. Can two people who have learned the hard way never to trust anyone find a way to trust each other? Then again perhaps they haven't learned hard enough!

I have to admit I was fascinated by the ever expanding web of deceit, lies, and conspiracy Ms. Cornick wove around her protagonists and by how well she resolved everything at the end. Masterfully planned, brilliantly executed!

Note: This is the middle book of the Scandalous Women of the Ton Trilogy involving the same basic group of characters, though each book concentrates on a different couple. It turns out not to be absolutely necessary to have read Whisper of Scandal before reading this one, but some of the intricacies of the interrelationships and histories thereof will no doubt be clearer to you if you have. The trilogy concludes with Mistress by Midnight, and given that both of these books are also supposedly based on obscure historical events, I shall probably have to read them eventually.

Clever, Ms. Cornick, very clever.
