Doctor Syn Returns book.

Doctor Syn Returns book. These books are terrific fun. Dr Syn is one of those protean caped crusaders Poldark meets Batman in Russell Thorndike's adventures of Dr Syn. Published between 1915 and 1944, the novels tell the tales of Dr Christopher Syn, village parson driven to a life of piracy by a terrible lust for revenge. In this the third book (but second chronologically), Dr Syn adopts a third guise, that of the terrifying Scarecrow, to protect the smugglers of Kent from the forces of His Majesty's Customs and Excise.

10 part reading of Russel Thorndike's 1913 adventure novel. Dr Syn is the 18th century parson of Dymchurch, a (real life) village on Romney Marsh. After various adventures in North America and the Caribbean, including a successful career as a pirate, he returns to Dymchurch to once more take up his post. Realising though that the local smugglers are in need of a leader, by night he adopts the persona of "the Scarecrow", the ruthless leader of the smugglers, but by day is the middle aged parson.

Arthur Russell Thorndike (6 February 1885, Rochester, Kent – 7 November 1972) was a British actor and novelist, best known for the Doctor Syn of Romney Marsh novels. Less well-known than his sister Sybil but equally versatile, Russell Thorndike's first love was writing and, after serving in World War I, he devoted himself to it. He was born in Rochester, Kent, where his father had recently become a canon at the cathedral.

Syn, who has tired of piracy, tries to settle down as the vicar of the little town of Dymchurch in Kent, England.

By (author) Russell Thorndyke. Syn, who has tired of piracy, tries to settle down as the vicar of the little town of Dymchurch in Kent, England. Syn's attempt to live an obscure life fails when he is drawn into the local smuggling trade.

I've already read all of the books in this series about 40 years ago, and have enjoyed this one again. I would suggest all readers start at the beginning of the series as they progress in order. Look under Russell Thorndike on the internet to get the series in order. A great light hearted adventure story to be enjoyed from childhood to old age. GREAT

Years ago as a teen I started reading the Dr Syn books and thoroughly enjoyed them. At the time I was only able to find two of the books in the series and after many attempts over the years all I came across in searches was that they were no longer in print. When I found that Amazon had all of the books (except one which I found a .pdf version of online elsewhere)I was thrilled. However in reading the digital versions I found that whoever did the editing/conversion for the Kindle editions apparently had never heard of spell check or proof reading. I appreciate that the books were quite inexpensive in price but I was appalled by the poor quality. It would have been far better to pay more each book and have a quality produced item. The title of this review says it all "Great story, bad editing".

Like it a lot. Reminds me of the Plot in the Disney Movie I saw as a kid. I learned recently who wrote the book and started reading the series. There seems to be seven books in the series. The leaders of the Smugglers are Dr. Syn (Scarecrow and Preacher) Mipps (Sexton) and Bones (Highwayman). They trick the Kings men (Dragoons, Pressmen, etc.). At the same time the Preacher talks against the Smugglers in church while leading them as the Scarecrow. With its plots and sub-plots a very good book.

I read the Dr. Syn books when I was young but I had never read the first one. The plot really is a little ridiculous even for an adventure book, way too many dramatic things happen too quickly to be very enjoyable.

But the descriptions and dialog seem really good to me (I say 'seem' because I don't know how they spoke back in that time). I was thinking to re-read the whole series again, but instead I will look for some similar works.

The adventures of the Scarecrow continue and it's quite a thrill ride. If you like pirates, highwaymen, Robin Hood, Zorro etc. you'll really enjoy Thorndike's adventure series about Dr Syn. This book follows The Return of Dr Syn (also titled The Scarecrow Rides).
I highly recommend this for history and adventure lovers.

Since this is a gift, I cannot provide a review.

I'm really enjoying the entire Dr. Syn/Scarecrow series. I remember the Disney movies as a kid and its fun to have them brought back to life. They're not great literature and fun to read. The "Robin Hood" message fits in well with our times.
What a great book, it has everything a reader could want and more. Well written by one of the greatest authors of the genre.
