We know so well, are reminded so often of the worth of the good book and great, that too often we fail to observe or understand the influence for good of a boy's recreational reading. Such books may influence him for good or ill as profoundly as his play activities, of which they are a vital part. The needful thing is to find stories in which the heroes have the characteristics boys so much admire – unquenchable courage, immense resourcefulness, absolute fidelity, conspicuous greatness.

Part I. Chapter I. Brother and sister. They ran across the shining sand, the Pacific thundering its long surge at their backs, and when they gained the roadway leaped upon bicycles and dived at faster pace into the green avenues of the park. There were three of them, three boys, in as many bright-colored sweaters, and they "scorched" along the cycle-path as dangerously near the speed-limit as is the custom of boys in bright-colored sweaters to go. They may have exceeded the speed-limit. A mounted park policeman thought so, but was not sure, and contented himself with.

One of the pioneers of 20th century American literature, Jack London specialized in tales of adventure inspired by his own experiences. London was born in San Francisco in 1876.

The Cruise of the Dazzler is an early novel by Jack London, set in his home city of San Francisco. It is considered a boy's adventure novel. In the novel, Joe Bronson, dissatisfied with his dull life at school, runs away and joins the crew of a sloop he sees in San Francisco Bay. He finds the captain is involved in criminal activities. The nautical activities on board a sailing boat are authentically described, and there are convincing descriptions of boats enduring stormy weather at sea.

Tempting boys to be what they should be-giving them in wholesome form what they want-that is the purpose and power of Scouting. To help parents and leaders of youth secure books boys like best that are also best for boys, the Boy Scouts of America organized EVERY BOY'S LIBRARY.

Published in 1902, Jack London sold this book (his first full-length novel) as a boy's adventure novel set in San Francisco, his hometown. In his autobiography, London recalls lifting several more elements in this novel from his adolescence, as in youth he bought a sloop called the Razzle Dazzle from a oyster pirate nicknamed "French Frank.

John Griffith Jack London (born John Griffith Chaney, January 12, 1876 – November 22, 1916) was an American author. I think it should be translated to film because the setting in the early 1900s in the San Francisco Bay Area is intriguing and very exciting. It has a positive message for youth of any time period, including today. The book reminds me of Huckleberry Finn in San Francisco. However, I do not like the book layout from the publisher General Books LLC. The clumsy layout, lack of illustrations, gives the story no justice!

Soon they were in the midst of the shipping, passing in and out among the vessels which had come from the ends of the earth. Later they crossed the fairway, where the ferry steamers, crowded with passengers, passed to and fro between San Francisco and Oakland. One came so close that the passengers crowded to the side to see the gallant little sloop and the two boys in the cockpit. Joe gazed enviously at the row of down-turned faces. They were all going to their homes, while he-he was going he knew not whither, at the will of French Pete.

However, I do not like the book layout from the publisher General Books LLC. The clumsy layout, lack of illustrations, gives the story no justice! The intro does explain why this publisher uses no illustrations and how they are economical in producing huge numbers of classics with a scanning machine. However, there are terrible line breaks in the book. The style of this book is not my cup of tea, but I am sure others wouldn't mind it to save a penny. I'd rather read this book on Kindle or check the book out from the library, than own this plain and clumsy copy!

Jack London is a master of weaving outdoor adventure with human frailty. "Cruise" is a wonderful story of early San Fransico and a young man's thirst for adventure.
