I PASSED all three CSET Multiple Subjects tests using this book on my first try!!!!!
I bought this book about 3 weeks before the test. I had taken out the Barron's and Kaplan CSET books from the library, but found them to be too lengthy. I knew I could not memorize 120 pages of Science text. But, they were good for taking the practice tests, so I would recommend them but the Cliff Note's book worked best for me. The part I especially liked is that they give you some samples questions in each subject area along with the content. But, they explain the answer right there, so you don't have to search in the back of the book for the answer and the reasoning. I found that to be extremely helpful because I was able to read a question, answer it and have the answer and the explanation immediately explained. Then I went on to read the subject in more depth and then took the traditional practice tests at the end of the book. The content was easy to read and understand, unlike some of the other books, and it was organized in a way that worked for me. It did not present an overwhelming amount of information. It was concise and thorough and I used it as my main study guide. I did not feel that confident when I took the test and wished I had studied longer than 3 weeks, about 2 hours a day, but I passed all three on the first try, so I'm very happy with this book.

I passed my CSET so I give this 5 stars!

This is pretty comprehensive and the questions were similar to those on the actual test. I'd recommend buying this if you have the CSET.

I am a mid-career professional shifting gears to become a teacher. I have been out of college for about 20 years and was insanely freaked out about this test. I studied from this guide for every single subtest and it was, undeniably, helpful. I passed all three on the first try. For those saying it isn't helpful, I can only equate it to a couple of things. 1) You are expecting it to GIVE you the answers to the test instead of guiding you through the general content and test strategies needed (it is, after-all, a guide). 2) You didn't really study, but glanced through the book thinking that was all you needed. 3) You didn't give yourself enough time to prepare or, well, . . . you know where I am going with this . . .

Of course I studied like crazy - for hours on end and spent entire days on the weekend away from my husband and kids in preparation. So, please do not think this is a "quick fix." YOU MUST STUDY FOR THE TEST. I read nearly every guide book out there and this one was definitely the most well rounded and comprehensive. Are parts of it "dry reading?" Of course, look at the content you are studying for. But it touches on every area the test covers. There was not one question on the test that I felt I hadn't been introduced to in the Cliff's Note book. The practice tests are very close to what was covered in the test and when used in conjunction with other study guides and readings/materials, it ensures you are prepared for all content you will encounter. The History/Language Arts section is one of the harder areas to nail down, because it is so broad. I thought the Kaplan study guide was a good supplement for this section of the book.

If I could pass after 20 years out of college and having been raised outside of California with no knowledge of California History. It can be done. It is a hard test and you must study. The Cliff Notes book is not a quick fix, but it is the best guide out there - a guide - as it says . . .

I waited until I got my results to post my review of this book. I passed all three subtests at once on my first try. I am very surprised because I walked out of that room feeling horrible, certain that I failed test II (math/science) and completely unsure about test I.

So onto the real review of the book: The material is *almost* all in there. I was thrown for a loop on one of the math constructed response questions. It is probably a good idea to also get the "What your 5th/6th grader needs to know" books. They cover the material the Cliffnotes book leaves out or barely mentions.

As far as test I (social studies/history/English/etc.), I didn't run into too many surprises. The history section of the book is very detailed and presented in outline form, so it's a little difficult to read the outlines and get a good understanding. You'll probably need to read up from other sources, but the high points are in the book. Study that California section in depth. You will definitely need it, and the book does an excellent job of laying out what you need to know.

Another book that I'd recommend for the history section is "Everything you need to know about American history homework" for 4th - 6th grades. It lays out the whole history of the US in a simple and easy-to-read format like "Causes of the Civil War" then "Results of the Civil War" etc., for every major event in US history.

The book covers the material on test III very well: physical education, the arts, music, human development. Of the three tests, I felt the most well-prepared for this one. I used only this book to study for that section.

This is a massive book. Don't think you're going to be able to study the material in a week and pass all your subtests. I studied for about three weeks (right after taking the CBEST), and I wish I would've had more time to study. I studied before work, during lunch, in the evenings after work, all weekend long - probably the hardest I've ever studied. It's a ton of material to get through, and it takes time to relearn some of the things we've forgotten over the years.

Since this was my primary study guide, I have to give it five stars because it helped me get the job done the first try, and that's what we're all striving for. Give yourself the time to get through it, and you'll do well too. Good luck!
