Sir William Richard Gowers FRS (/ˈɡaʊ. rz/; 20 March 1845 – 4 May 1915) was a British neurologist, described by Macdonald Critchley in 1949 as "probably the greatest clinical neurologist of all time"

Sir William Richard Gowers FRS (/ˈɡaʊ. rz/; 20 March 1845 – 4 May 1915) was a British neurologist, described by Macdonald Critchley in 1949 as "probably the greatest clinical neurologist of all time". He practised at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptics, Queen Square, London (now the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery) from 1870–1910, ran a consultancy from his home in Queen Anne Street, W1, and lectured at University College Hospital

The final golden age of the ocean-going passenger liner was from the mid-1950s through to the late 1960s, when famous liners such as the Queen Mary, the Queen Elizabeth, The United States, and the France, traversed the Atlantic. They offered an unrivalled quality of service as they sought to become holders of the 'Blue Riband' for the fastest crossing. With nostalgia for the great days of luxury travel increasing, publication of this tribute to the last generation of ocean-going passenger liners is opportune. Some of the liners featured will be well-known others less so. The book will appeal to all those who remember travelling on the great liners during these years as well as all maritime enthusiasts.

Yes, these unremarkable photos are in colour, however, the liners mentioned are obscure names with the exception of a few of the greats. The descriptions are accurate, I suppose, but brief, leaving one something to be desired.

There is no mention of any of the French Line, or the Italian Line ships, but mostly British with 3 photos of QE2. It's difficult to follow the organisation of this book with no divisions between alphabetical sequences, and no table of contents. Two of the QE2 photos are on the front and back of one page in the middle of the book, and the other is at the very back of the book, on the hard back, but not a current view with her larger funnel. Shouldn't they have been positioned all together? There is no title page or ending bibliography, and it feels like a hardback booklet.

This thin book is printed on lightweight paper reminiscent of a bargain book, but not at a bargain price for what one gets. There are no interior photos, and it's not worth the price or trouble unless you want to add it to a library as a novelty item. It may be for the extreme enthusiast with money to burn, or someone writing a book and needing research on an obscure old liner. I would never have purchased this if I had happened upon it in a shop. I give it three stars for the research possibilities as an expensive liner encyclopaedia, but one star for design and publication.

This little book packs quite a punch with dozens of nice colour photos of so many now destroyed passenger liners. My favorite Cunarder, Mauretania II makes the cover. A special treat for me!
