Numerous basin aquifers in arid and semi-arid regions of the world derive a significant portion of their recharge from adjacent mountains. Recharge can effectively occur through either stream infiltration in the mountain front zone (mountain-front recharge, MFR) or subsurface flow from the mountain (mountain-block recharge, MBR).

The state-of-the-art of hydrology and hydrogeology in the arid and semi-arid areas of Africa. Proceedings of the Sahel Forum, Ouagadougou, February 1989. International Water Resources Association, Urbana, 1990. N2 - The Sahel has for many centuries been characterised by frequent droughts and flash floods. Today this causes many problems for the water resources management of the developing countries to the region. One of these problems is a severe shortage of hydrological information on the region.

Much of southern and eastern Africa is semi-arid and heavily groundwater dependent. Borehole drilling commenced over a hundred years ago with magnetic and electrical resistivity surveys for borehole siting being introduced from 1936

Arid and semi-arid areas have particular challenges that have received little attention.

These changes not only affect landscape productivity, but also increase aridity of the climate (Mahhanne et al, 2016). Land use change by human interference and climate change impact hydrological processes pertaining to water use that would determine water quantity and quality.

The book introduces the engineering hydrology of arid and semi-arid regions, covering meteorological processes and hydrology. The author discusses precipitation and precipitation losses, catchment characteristics, and runoff estimation methods. He also examines streamflow measurements and hydrographs, flood routing, and groundwater hydrology, including the basic equations of groundwater flow and analytic solutions describing flow aquifers, pumping tests, and salt water intrusion.

The book is intended for scientists, engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, and political decision makers interested in the water resources of arid and semi-arid environments.
