Yet, the Volkswagen persevered and since that time has grown to become a symbol of practicality and versatility in the U.S. Volkswagen enthusiasts will love this historical exploration of the reliable cars, covering all models imported to the U.S. from the first arrivals in 1949 to today's latest innovations. This book would be more accurately titled "A Catalog of Volkswagen," as it doesn't rise to the level of standard in my opinion. It isn't a bad book, but I was disappointed with it. The text is rife with factual errors, such as the claim that 1969 was the first year for a "truly" independent rear suspension (not true; the axles on previous "swingaxle" VWs may not have been fully articulated with a CV joint on the outboard end, but they were nonetheless fully independent. Perhaps the "IRS" moniker applied to the newer transaxle causes confusion), or listing every year of Type 3s as having kingpin front suspensions even though they used ball joints from the start. There's a caption in the 1965 section that reads "Popular in North America in 1965 was the VW 1500 Fastback," but the Fastback was a 1600, introduced as a 1966 model. Another caption incorrectly calls a 412 wagon a Squareback. Small things, but you'll want to think twice about using this book to settle any bar bets. Maybe you're not a hopeless and annoying gearhead like me; you'll still likely be annoyed that the author almost never includes photos of new models with the year they were introduced; most the time, you'll have to flip ahead, and you won't even find a picture of the much-loved Thing at all. The illustration captions are unimaginative and repetitive, and the book could have used a final going-over by a copyeditor.

I'm not exactly sorry I bought it. There are plenty of photos, a detailed introduction and interesting historical notes, and if you're like me, you want every book on Volkswagen ever written. But this one needs improvement.

I enjoyed very much. If you want details about Volkswagens over the years, this is a good book for it. It is very accurate with few errors. One error I noticed was the pictures with the year 1968 are not 1968 Beetles.

Centrizius

This is an excellent reference book for VW enthusiasts. There is a plethora of information and photos for the different models. Amazon's used sellers offered it for a crazy low price, and this book is well worth the money.
