Only 17 left in stock (more on the way). Trocchi, especially in this, his masterpiece, along with writers such as William Burroughs, taught me that writers do not make up stories but attempt to find the truth. Cain's Book is a High Priest's raging celebration of the iron-in-the-soul, American style. The book is a literary landmark; it is probably the last great piece of writing in a classic linear format. Cain's Book is a treasure. It is true, it has art, it is brave.

Cain's Book is a 1960 novel by Scottish beat writer Alexander Trocchi. A roman à clef, it details the life of Joe Necchi, a heroin addict and writer, who is living and working on a scow on the Hudson River in New York. The book alternates between Necchi/Trocchi's attempts to score and flashbacks to his experiences as a child in Glasgow, and later as a young man in London and Paris.

Alexander Whitelaw Robertson Trocchi (/ˈtrɒki/ TROK-ee; 30 July 1925 – 15 April 1984) was a Scottish novelist. Trocchi was born in Glasgow to a Scottish mother and Italian father. After working as a seaman on the Murmansk convoys, he attended the University of Glasgow. On graduation he obtained a travelling grant that enabled him to relocate to continental Europe.

Probably the most famous novel about drug addiction and the hazards and excitements of an addict's life after Burrough's Naked Lunch, this modern classic - which was prosecuted in Britain for obscenity in 1965 - still shocks in its frankness and is relevant to this day.

Alexander Trocchi was born in Glasgow in 1925. By the time of his death in 1984, he had cut a colourful swathe through many of the important cultural movements. in both Europe and America. Alexander Trocchi was born in Glasgow in 1925. A controversial figure, described variously as a junkie, pimp, outsider, Scottish beat, literary outlaw, visionary, philosopher, underground organiser and antique book dealer, Trocchi rubbed shoulders with many of the great names of modern literature.

Like DeQuincey and Baudelaire before him, Trocchi's muse was drugs. But unlike his literary predecessors, in his roman a clef, Trocchi never romanticizes the source of his inspiration

An un-self-forgiving existentialism, rendered with writerly exactness and muscularity, set this novel apart from all others of the genre. William S. Burroughs. Like DeQuincey and Baudelaire before him, Trocchi's muse was drugs. But unlike his literary predecessors, in his roman a clef, Trocchi never romanticizes the source of his inspiration. If the experience of heroin, of the "fix," is central to Cain's Book, both its destructive force and the possibilities for creativity it creates are recognized and accepted without apology.

It was at this time too that Trocchi wrote Cain’s Book telling of his sexual misadventures and heroin highs during his time living on the Hudson River.

Trocchi was born in Glasgow in 1925 to an Italian father and a Scottish mother. He attended Glasgow University from 1942-43 before joining the Royal Navy from 1943-46. Perhaps unsurprisingly, military life didn’t suit him and he returned to University to study philosophy. It was at this time too that Trocchi wrote Cain’s Book telling of his sexual misadventures and heroin highs during his time living on the Hudson River.
