The drawings and layout are great, but even with a basic background in these concepts I thought it lacked important detail and explanation. I found myself googling and youtubing supplemental explanations for everything mentioned just to understand it.

So, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone just starting out. I would look for something that offers more detail. Right now I'm just using it as an outline of what to research more in-depth on my own.

This was not, in fact, the book that taught me electronics. That honor goes to Charles Platt's Make: Electronics. However, if I had discovered it in the 80s or 90s before Platt's book existed, I'm sure it would have done the job. It's less hands-on than Platt's book, and doesn't offer as much hand-holding or practical advice for beginners, but it's very accessible nonetheless. The explanations are clear, if concise, and the drawings are very elucidating. The book explains everything you need to know about the fundamentals of electricity as well as the passive components and transistors that you'll need to build basic circuits. It also covers a few of the classic linear and digital ICs, but it was written before microcontrollers became commonplace, so it doesn't even mention them.

But none of this explains my attachment to this book, which is on a much more emotional level. The fact that the entire book is handwritten and hand-illustrated gives it a very personal touch. The drawings are whimsical and endearing. How can you not smile at the illustrations of electrons gleefully zipping down a wire, or at a MOSFET with lightning bolts shooting out of its head because it got zapped by static? Even if you already know everything that you could possibly learn from this book, it's still worth a read. As the title of this review suggests, it's like a comic book for electronic nerds. I'm sure if I had been given this book as a kid it would have captured my imagination and gotten me hooked. Just thumb through the book and you can tell that Forrest Mims loves teaching people about electronics and has a special talent for doing so.

Really a solid book for folks who know absolutely nothing about electronics in general. It does a nice job of explaining the introductory subjects with pictures/drawing and that’s something I don’t see enough off in other how to books. Text is great but visual make it all that greater to understand.

Know that this book might not be for you if you already have an introductory knowledge of electronics. Say if you already have a multimeter and work with electronics on the level of understanding where you don’t use instructions to make projects then this book is best to have as a reference or a niceness refresher for the basics.

This is an amazing book. I got my first copy when I was a kid and lost it during a move. I got another one. Even though I have moved on to more advanced electronics I refer to this book often as a quick reference. It is a great book for anyone wanting to get some basic electronics knowledge. I recommend it to mechanics and auto techs that are trying to learn more about electronics so they can troubleshoot things.

Ok, so I'm starting my search and study in the subject of Electronics. This book is presented in a notebook format and notes. It seems like the way it's presented, will provide basics and maybe more. Full of drawings and two tables, at the beginning and the end of the book to reference regarding terms along with corresponding drawing. So as you read through the texts, you look up the parts for association. I think it's a good method to help memorize and learn the material. I recommend this book if you are a beginner like me.

I first read this book as a 13 or 14 year old and it sparked a life-long hobby. I'm now 52, a software developer by trade, but still very active in my hobby of electronic design and construction. It's great to see my young boys also getting started in this hobby with the very same books I read (yes, I kept them for nearly 40 years!)

It is a reprint of the original - so it was exactly what you would expect if you had this book as a kid in the 80s. A lot of the circuits are using components you can no longer get, but its is still worth it for the overall cartoonish but accurate description of how electronics work.
A good book for beginners. Clear, but some of the items definitions could have been better described and elaborated. A bit more examples on how each component is used would have made this book the excellent choice for beginners and advanced users.
