While Still We Live book. A master of the suspense novel. THE BOSTON GLOBEIt began very. Helen MacInnes wrote While A young British woman visiting Poland is recruited as a double agent on the eve of the Nazi invasion. The first half, set in Warsaw during the siege and in the first days of the occupation, was dynamite. Then Sheila Matthews ends up trekking through the Polish countryside as a refugee, joining the Resistance and spending lots of time in the forest. This part was a real slog, made nearly unendurable by a deeply stupid 'insta-love' sub-plot. I skimmed the last 100 pages.

There! she said, and watched him anxiously as he examined the sheet of paper. Good, he said once more.

It's a tale of love and war, heroism and courage.

English girl Sheila Matthews' innocent holiday to Poland becomes a nightmare when the German Army invade in the summer of 1939.

Helen Macinnes ollapsed with a sigh as if they were glad that the mockery of their hollow walls was at last ended. Sheila argued the point: whether the Germans were afraid of looking at the chaos they had created, or whether they were afraid of being torn apart by angry hands in dark streets. Russell Stevens supported the latter view. These boys aren’t squeamish over destruction, he pointed.

I never thought I'd read another "spy" story, but this book blew me away. The writing was tight and moderately paced. I had enough time to absorb the goings on before moving on to the next crisis. A young English woman goes to Poland to visit some friends. She unfortunately gets caught up in the Nazi invasion. She gets drafted as a spy. Not knowing at first whom to trust, she has her doubts. A very unlikely spy, she does her best to stay away from trouble and dance the dance she needs to in order to stay out of Nazi hands. Trying to help her friends in a small village, she goes to rescue them in a Nazi car with her driver who is really buys the "party line." Ambushed, she gets kidnapped by Polish resistance fighters who don't know whether to believe her wild story or not. It's a beautifully written story, with believable characters. It tells the story of the Nazi invasion of Poland very well with a touch of romance.

I read this book many years ago & enjoyed reading it again.A young English girl is staying at the home of friends in Poland, the who knew her late father, an Englishman who died under strange circumstances. During her stay, Germany launches WW2 with the invasion of Poland. despite efforts to flee, the young woman witnesses the devastation of war on her friends , their families & ordinary people trapped in the devastation. She becomes sort of a double agent & is forced to flee Warsaw & try to get back to England. Along the way, she experiences betrayal from Nazi collaborators & selfless sacrifice by ordinary people trying to help her escape. She also finds the love of her life ! It's a LONG book but it describes the horrors & heroism of war. It's very detailed but worth the effort!

One of Helen MacInnes' two departures from her suspense fiction genre, and one of my favorite books for over 45 years, WHILE STILL WE LIVE begins on the eve of the German invasion of Poland in 1939. We experience with them the earliest weeks of war as their lives are overtaken by battle and destruction. People rise to the challenges of survival and resistance. The book was written during the war and published at the end of WWII. I love this book, recommend it.

Helen MacInnes' other departure from her suspense filled stories is FRIENDS AND LOVERS. She looks into the hearts and lives of 2 young students in love, but separated geographically by their studies, and abandoned by their families' failure to recognize their commitment to a future together. It's another special treat for romance lovers in the queen's brief departure from her mastery of suspense.

Poland, early in WWII as Nazi Germany has begun its invasion and occupation - the true horrors of lost hope and promises never kept in the Nazi agreements. British and American involvement and non-involvement. It also depicts amazingly true stories of wartime heroics during this evil time with a little romance thrown in to spice it up. I liked it, some parts I simply could not put down, but some other parts were left dangling. The reviews on this book were outstanding and it pains me to not agree wholeheartedly. I kept expecting the heroine to remain tough and strong throughout. Why is it that it starts right, she gets tougher and then all of a sudden she falls apart. Maybe it's the timing of the century - it was after all written in the early 1940's. My own mother would have been her age then and I know once she'd started and committed to being a spy, she wouldn't become so weak/mushy around the strong male lead. BUT, that's exactly what happened. I didn't hate this storyline at all, in fact, it's my usual forte - but it kind of fell apart for me about 3/4's the way through. Sad, because she was a very good writer. Spy thrillers are a lot more fast-paced nowadays, so it was nice just to curl up with a slower moving mystery. Worth reading!

This novel depicts a country plunged into war, a family torn apart by the war, and a war time romance. But the novel does not reach a level of intense suspense or achieve an atmosphere of tension.
The struggles in the book feel authentic. The hardships, the cruelty, the devastation for the Polish people in Warsaw as well as the German vengeance on the country's villages all portray a crushing picture of the realities of war.
Perhaps there are three times the suspense rises to a meaningful level but it never achieves a level of intensity to produce anxiety for the fate of the character.
At times the book is long and void of action and therefore, creates a struggle to get through. Perhaps the nearly 700 page book needed a stronger editor.
Sheila is not a physically strong character, not in Warsaw and not on the journey into the forest which impacts the believability of the adventure.
In summary, the book gave a perspective on World War II in Poland which I did not have before reading the novel. I gained an immense respect for Poland and its people and what they had to endure. But the investment of time and effort to learn this perspective was more than I anticipated. And as the ending plays out, I am convinced my earlier leanings of this novel being a romance, not a suspense thriller, was spot on.

Fast-paced WW II novel about the 1939 fall of Poland to the German Blitzkrieg, and subsequent hardships endured by the Poles under the yoke of their Nazi conquerors. The paper book runs to nearly 450 pages, but mostly doesn't feel that long. There are some factors which required a willing suspension of disbelief, such as the amazing ability of the English heroine to speak almost fluent Polish after a few months' stay in the country, and the total absence of any reference to those citizens who welcomed the Nazis with open arms,; but if you can get past them, the story will carry you along. Even though neither the author nor (probably) most of her readers could have any first-hand knowledge of the effects of the invasion on the residents of Warsaw and the surrounding villages, because of the meticulous research Ms. MacInnes brings to all of her books, we feel that it is "right." Recommended.
