Comments to eBook My Brother's Ghost
True enough, this book might not be noticed on a standard bookshelf.
Small format is unfortunately not the first choice for most children and not as easy to hold for an adult to read with the child.
Nevertheless, invaluable for a grieving child or even adult. Should be in every counselors office shelf, every religious or spiritual leaders shelf, every doctor's office shelf.
When I first picked this small book up, I mistakenly thought it would be a children's bedtime story. (Ahlberg has penned many brilliant children's books). A few pages in, I realised this was something very special, as a lump grew in my throat and tears welled up in my eyes. A lovely read for adults and for children 8+ that won't let you go once you have turned the last page. I have bought about 5 copies of this book, and the Kindle edition as well, as I keep giving copies to friends. One of my very favourite books.
In this book, Frances, now middle-aged, is looking back on her childhood in the 1950s when her brother Tom dies and comes back as a ghost to help her and her younger brother, Harry, negotiate their difficult life as poor orphans who live with their aunt and uncle. Frances remembers all the dangers and difficulties and how Tom learned to speak and how he always seemed to be there to help. This story starts when they first see Tom's ghost and goes through all that happens between Tom and Frances and Harry as children from that time.

'My brother's ghost' is written as a haunting memoir and I felt like each section could almost stand alone as flash fiction. The prose and imagery is lovely but not flowery, this is a poignant but not sentimental book. Frances speaks very matter of factly about her life and the things that happened. The emotion is powerfully there in the story but it's understated and unforced.

If you're looking for a traditional story with a lot of adventure and escapades, this isn't going to be the book for you. But if you are after a gently told ghost story which is poignant and real, then this could be something that you enjoy as much as I did.

Highly recommended.
For those who like to cry, and for those who don't, this is a wonderful, emotionally moving, fictious, first-person story about what happens after the death of the narrator's brother.
I checked this small book out of the local library because I liked the cover design and title-it was something different. With that much to go on, I started reading. I had only planned to read the beginning-having a tight schedule that day-nothing more, but could not, would not put it down. The book was an amazing story giving readers a fictious glimpse into the afterlife on two fronts, not only some of the afterlife of the brother, but the afterlife of the narrator and how she copes with the loss of her brother. Having lost my dear father to death three years ago, I found myself sobbing by the end of the book. For me, the book stirred up forgotten grief as I identified with the narrator. More than that, I will not tell. Read it yourself and do remember the tissue.
This isn't even a novella, it's more of an article. This would be a good outline but very disappointing for a read.
