"What Matters to You? Matters to Us: Engaging Six Vital Themes of Our Faith" is a quick seventy one pages. But it is packed with very accessible theology, quotations, prayer practices, Bible studies, and a great chapter on United Church of Christ history.

It is tied very closely in spirit and content to the UCC's "Still Speaking" ad campaign (to which it refers), and while it works as a "stand alone" book, it seems most clearly intended as a resource for congregations to use in conjunction with that campaign. For those of us in UCC churches, it fills a need, because it helps explain "who we are" to that person who sees an ad and shows up at church, then comes back, then over time makes the slow move toward becoming a member. It's a workbook that doesn't feel like a workbook.

But best of all, it does it in a thoughtful and powerful way. "Who we are," as the author develops it, turns out to be closely related to who YOU are as the reader. This makes an important point for newcomers, of course. It also means that UCC congregations full of long-standing members would find much to ponder and savor as they explored the book.

So, here are the vital themes:

Appendix: The preamble to the UCC Constitution and Statement of Faith

I can imagine it offering great "tag lines" within the life of a congregation -- that occasional reference in a sermon or newsletter, that mention in a moment for mission or a church meeting, that conversation in the grocery story parking lot, etc.

People are eager for the language that helps them refer to their faith commitments -- and which helps them recognize those moments when their faith commitments are being called into action. This book offers just that language.
