Harry Sidebottom's "Lion of the Sun" continues the story of Marcus Claudius Ballista, a courageous "Warrior of Rome" born to the Angles but raised as a hostage in the Roman imperial court. When we left Ballista at the end of "King of Kings" he, along with his emperor Valerian, had fallen victim to a treacherous plot by the emperor's treasurer, T. Fulvius Macrianus, known as Macrianus the Lame, who had betrayed the emperor and his field army to Sassanid King of Kings, Shapur I.

The author has done it again writing another excellent historical novel of the late Roman Empire. This one starts where the previous book left off (King of Kings) where Ballista is being led away to captivity by the Persians after the defeat and capture of Valerian in 260 AD.

What I like about this book and this author are the following.
1. This book is well researched. The author does an excellent job of analyzing all the writings and archeology of the period.
2. The book uses the research to paint a very believable picture of the period. I almost thought that I was there looking at the cities and the countryside.
3. The action is palpable. You can feel it. More than the other two books, Ballista is in the action, in one battle after another, and his family also dodges some challenges.
4. The storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat. You believe that everything will end well, but at times you wonder. At one point especially where his wife and sons were in trouble, I was challenged to jump ahead to try to find out.
5. The ending is satisfying. I won't tell you what it is, but you should enjoy it.
6. All in all, the book is very believable. In fact, of all the authors that I've read of Roman Historical Fiction, this author's stories are the most believable.

I can't wait for the next installment - mentioned in the Historical Afterward - The Caspian Gates.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the Roman Empire. This is not dry historical analysis but an excellent story based upon the historical facts, as we know them today.

Lion of the Sun is the third of five (so-far) novels centered around the character of Ballista. A warrior from the north of Europe, he finds himself in the legions of Rome, serving under a succession of Emperors.

It is a military tale for the most part--the descriptions of military equipment, strategy, and battle scenes, are so well done one can feel the dust under the horses' hooves, smell the sweat and the fear, taste the blood, and feel the awful adrenaline surge of the fight.

Yet this is not a simple military legionary tale. Ballista is an interesting character, and the reader can feel his inner turmoil as he ponders being haunted by a vengeful ghost, worries about his family's safety, as he takes oaths he is not sure he can keep.

While it is not always possible to start a book in the middle of its series, Lion of the Sun stands on its own. The reader can catch glimpses of Ballista's past (assumedly told well in the earlier two novels), and the book ends well enough, so while it is clear there are later books to come, this story satisfies.

As the novel opens, Emperor Valerian has been captured by the Persian King. Ballista must navigate the dangerous waters of usurpers, treachery, and oaths taken under duress or under honor, while he fights in battle against Persians and occasionally other Romans. Ballista is stricken with guilt over his involvement in the death of a previous Emperor, Maximinus Thrax, and has to take great care as he tries to serve the usurper Macrianus, while protecting his wife and two sons.

The novel's title refers to the historical character Odenathus of Palmyra, husband to Zenobia. For being the title character, Odenathus actually plays a very small, yet integral part. His presence is felt later on, as it is unknown whether he will support Macrianus, or the Emperor Gallienus, or strike out on his own.

Having read some of the scholarly works mentioned in the Afterword, it was an extreme pleasure to read the fictional fleshing-out of the people and events that sometimes feel "glossed-over" in the history books.

There is a disappointment in the paltry use of Julia, Ballista's wife. She has sterling moments of her own, to be sure, but she provides next to nothing to Ballista's character. At least, not in this novel. That is a pity, as this detracts a bit from the otherwise full picture of Ballista as more than a stereotypical Roman soldier, manly man. Their scenes together feel almost stilted, as if she is there simply to assure he has a family.

The disappointment however is not enough to prevent the reading of the next two books in the series. One is already out, the other is due out later in 2013. It might be fun to start at the beginning as well, and meet Ballista as a younger man, just starting out.

DR. SIDEBOTTOM'S "WARRIOR OF ROME" SERIES SHOWS A SUPERB RECONSTRUCTION OF THE STRANGE ANOMALIES
THAT BESET THE ROMAN EMPIRE IN ITS FIRST MAJOR DECLINE, IN THE 3RD CENTURY AD WHEN THE SCENE OF ITS
CONCERN SHIFTED EAST TO SYRIA, TO ANTIOCH, EDESSA AND PALMYRA. THE PLOTS I SHALL NOT DISCUSS SO
THAT THE READER MAY HAVE HIS/HER FULL PLEASURE OF READING AN ADVENTURE STORY THAT IS
ALSO AN INTRODUCTION TO A SLICE OF HISTORY THAT HAS MOST LIKELY NEVER YET BEEN READ BY HIM/HER.

EXCELLENT CASTING, DEVIOUS ACTION, TWISTS OF LEVANTINE OBSCURITY AFFECTING THE ENTIRE ROMAN EMPIRE ON
BACKSTREETS OF ANTIOCH, A STORY AS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE OF THE JULIAN DYNASTY OR OF THE "FIVE GOOD EMPERORS"
AS COULD PLAUSIBLY BE WRITTEN.

The Roman Empire of the third century was a time of confusion, usurpers and barbarian raids. Few novelist have discovered this rich venue and the few that have did not have the scholarship in the area to did it justice. Sidebottom has researched the period and weaved a believable history and enjoyable tale. All five of his books are excellent and I would recommend starting with book 1.

Book 3 picks up from book 2 with our hero Balista captured by the Persians. In books 1 and 2, our hero was working under the constrained ethics of our 20th century. In Book 3 he becomes more a hero of antiquity where taking revenge is an accepted reaction.

I bought the kindle edition and worth the price.

Wonderful twists and turns from an author who thoroughly understands the world of the Roman Empire. In the process of an entertaining yarn, you learn much of its social and political system and the precariousness of a declining empire and the brutal 3-D chess game of succession.

Like the other previous novels, Book Three of the Warrior Of Rome series by Dr. Sidebottom doesn't dissapoint. What is unique about this wonderful series is that it is set during The Crisis of the Third Century, an underepresented era of the Roman Empire - both in novels and Hollywood. Even authoritative history books exploring this period are scarce. Another is the fact, that almost all of the characters - from Valerian and Macrianus to Shapur and Odenatus are real people. And, yes, even our hero Ballista is no made up Gladiator/Maximus-clone - he, too, is real. Highly recommended!
