One hundred-fifty years ago today, Abraham Lincoln lay mortally wounded, surrounded by several advisors and doctors, son Robert, and his pastor and good friend Dr. Phineas Gurley. Dr. Gurley later described what followed Lincoln’s last breath: . or four or five minutes there was not the slightest noise or movement in that awful presence. We all stood transfixed in our positions, speechless, breathless, around the dead body of that great and good man. At length the Secretary. of War, who was standing at my left, broke the silence, and said, 'Doctor, will you say anything?'

This is a delightful book about the Abraham Lincoln that most people do not know. Nebraskans should be very proud of this story. The book is beautifully written and beautifully illustrated.

This is a great read for anyone who is interested in either Abe Lincoln or the state of Nebraska. Although it does not function as a biography of Lincoln, instead highlighting certain of the crucial events in his life as well as his decisions that influenced the formation of Nebraska, it does a great job of showing the connection between Lincoln and Nebraska in general and Lincoln and the capital city of Nebraska in particular.

As a transplant who fell in love with Nebraska 42 years ago when I first moved here, the stories this book tell about the people of Nebraska make me prouder than ever to be a citizen of this state. We're not perfect, but for the most part we're honest, caring, and hardworking people. All this comes out in the series of vignettes presented in this book.

This is an easy to read book, one that can readily be understood by middle school students. (At the same time it has plenty material that is of interest to adults.) It is nicely laid out and has a number of really good pictures as well as helpful maps that show the development of the political units from which the state of Nebraska was eventually carved.

It also tells the story of how the capital city of the state, originally called "Lancaster," got to be named after Lincoln, a story that I had heard before in somewhat garbled fashion, and which this book clarified.

It's an easy read and one that won't take much more than an hour. But it's worth owning, particularly if you have an interest in Nebraska in particular or the settlement of the plains in general.

I was motivated to buy this book because our prayer group is studying the history of Lincoln, Nebraska with the intention of praying for those aspects of the state that should be buttressed with prayer support. When I discovered this book through a friend, I was excited to read it. However, I had absolutely no idea that is was so extraordinary.

Every aspect of the book is exceptionally high quality; it was researched and executed with excellence. The text is easy enough for a middle-school student to understand and is equally interesting to an adult reader.

The illustrations and photos add immeasurably to the enjoyment of the text and the pullout quotes seemed "just right." It would make a beautiful "coffee table book."

The overall theme is Abraham Lincoln's life and his influence on the creation of the state of Nebraska. The author does a great job of highlighting Nebraska's part in the Civil War, although the territory did not become a state until after the war.

The shining star that the author refers to is the star on the map representing the capital of Nebraska. The author uses the star as a metaphor to encourage the reader to follow Abraham Lincoln's example of faith and the pursuit of God's will. To illustrate how this has been accomplished, she shares short stories of Nebraskans whose "stars" have shone throughout the years.

This is a book worth buying, reading and sharing. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading other books by Susan Grace Dittman.

For those devoted Lincoln fans -- both of the great President and the capital of Nebraska, this book is truly special. From the beauty of the opening cover, which captures both the amber waves of plain, the big Nebraska sky, and the bust of the man who saved our Union, this book is inspiring. The unique perspectives that connect Abe Lincoln to Nebraska are special. The cover is so beautiful that it would look good on any coffee table, but the content is just as rich! I would definitely recommend this book to almost anyone.
