Catherine sat through her classes like a zombie, seeing little, hearing less. She remembered his eyes, those eyes she'd grown to know so well, with a brand new look, wide-gray, excited. I can't feel anything, Catherine. What did it feel like? Her insides trembled at the thought of his staying away all night. She'd have to call his parents if he wasn't home when she got there

In Separate Beds, Elizabeth Buchan has captured the concerns and joys of contemporary women, and her timely, warm, and funny novel tracks the ebb and flow of family, fortune, and love that is familiar to so many readers.

Separate Beds is a poignant and compelling novel about the little acts of kindness that can reunite a family and rekindle a marriage. Praise for Elizabeth Buchan: 'Gorgeously well-written - funny, sad, sophisticated' Independent

Separate Beds is a poignant and compelling novel about the little acts of kindness that can reunite a family and rekindle a marriage. Praise for Elizabeth Buchan: 'Gorgeously well-written - funny, sad, sophisticated' Independent. Beautifully observed, with the insight and humour that one has come to expect from the author' Times. Compelling, compassionate, and aglow with moments of laugh-or-cry humour' Mail on Sunday. Buchan is a cut above the rest' Sunday Mirror.

This is a fairly typical plot for this sort of adult-chick-lit: middle-aged parents, adult children each with his/her own problems, and an aging Gran thrown in. Also a pitiful little dog. All very relevant, especially as the background is the current economic crisis. But Buchan keeps sending mixed signals. Tom and his wife Annie, who have slept in separate bedrooms for years [since their elder daughter left home, for which Annie blames Tom, it turns out] are forced back into one room when Tom's 80+year-old mother's investments will no longer sustain her in a care home and she comes to live with them. The proximity has Annie and Tom each reacting to the other's physical presence in ways that seem tender and at least semi-erotic. So you keep thinking: Will they? Have they? When will they? and all the time Annie is talking to her best friend at work about leaving Tom. So there is no clear through line here -- and maybe that's realism, but for the reader it's confusion.

One of the best things about the book is the grandmother, not that she is likable. Everyone is kind to her, heroically so, considering how much they didn't want her there. She articulates her feelings about being alone and suffering loss of everything that made life valuable to her, and points out that soon Annie, whom she has never liked, will one day be in her situation.

The book ends abruptly, with the implication that this one turn of the cards is going to make everything all right again. I think Buchan just got tired of all these fairly dull people.

I have always enjoyed books written by Elizabeth Buchan and this one did not disappoint either. It's a story of true life and compassion when a married couple is hit by misfortunes caused by the world financial crises.
As the reader, I found myself deeply involved in the emotions of each character and the problems presented by the son and his broken marriage, as well as the youngest daughter who is feeling various degrees of jealousy and envy of her two older siblings.
Thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Separate Beds was engaging to the point where I wanted to yell at Annie, "Stop letting him get away with it!" It was, however, a view of what happens in many enduring mardiages.

Really enjoyed this book, only took a couple of days to read it because I couldn't put it down. Can really relate to the characters and enjoy the authors style.

Elizabeth Buchan has a way of digging right into the hearts of her characters. She tells stories about real people with the kinds of problems that all of us struggle with. This story is about a family that is hit with financial crisis, caring for an aging parent, family schisms, and marital disintegration. I read thiss book in one sitting, and I hated to finish it. Elizabeth Buchan is a gifted writer and a scrupulous storyteller. And last, but not least, there is a dog...

I read " revenge of a middle aged women" and soon bought its sequal "The good wife". I loved both books and started looking for Buchan's books. I bought the kindle version of Seperate beds........but was very dissappointed, I found it so boring, I finished the book yesterday, as I like to finish books even when boring. I hate to stop half way in a book.
I found the story repetitive and very negative. Then in the last page all problems seem to resolve........a long lost daughter returns, an unemployed finds some work and the son is almost certain to get custody of his baby daughrer !

This novel will keep you completely engaged. You will want to know what happens to the characters. Great family study.
I was a huge fan of the Elzabeth Buchan's other books, but this one has been a disappointment. I found the story to be a bit predictable. It's not nearly as good a read as her other books, which had an engaging sub-element of humor. I found this one to be quite humorless.
