Mack Reynolds (1917-1983) Dallas McCord ('Mack') Reynolds was born in California in 1917. His father was the Socialist Labor Party Presidential Candidate on two occasions, and Reynolds' life and work were deeply affected by his political upbringing. After early careers in newspapers and computing, Reynolds returned from the Second World War and began to write science fiction.

We orbit the planet, Ravelle told him earnestly.

I. There is something about a passenger freighter that is unchanging, down through the centuries. Be it a Phoenecian galley that sets bravely forth from Tyre with stops at Malta, Carthage, Tingis and Cadiz on the way to far Cornwall. Be it a motorship originating in Sydney and stopping off in Madras, Ceylon, Aden and Port Said on its way to Genoa. We orbit the planet, Ravelle told him earnestly.

Dallas McCord "Mack" Reynolds (November 11, 1917 – January 30, 1983) was an American science fiction writer. His pen names included Dallas Ross, Mark Mallory, Clark Collins, Dallas Rose, Guy McCord, Maxine Reynolds, Bob Belmont, and Todd Harding. His work focused on socioeconomic speculation, usually expressed in thought-provoking explorations of utopian societies from a radical, sometime satiric perspective.

Nowhere near as cheesy as the blurb here would indicate. This is Mack Reynolds, after all, which means a good deal of dry socioeconomic discussion punctuated by clunky action pieces. Painless entertainment, overall.

I remember reading this back in the 70's, when I read everything by Mack Reynolds I could get hold of. I always liked the sociopolitical dissertations that peppered his fiction, and there's a good bit of that here. This is a still a pretty entertaining read, even though the occasional word or phrase is somewhat dated today. However, I must observe that the Kindle edition needs better proofreading. There is at least one point, roughly 29% through the book, where a previous paragraph was partially repeated, entirely out of context, within a subsequent paragraph, purely an error of editing. In another place, about 59% through, where the protagonist was explaining why section G does what it does, at least one important paragraph from the print edition is omitted altogether.

The premise points to an all out war of the sexes but the story is more intricate. An easy read for fans of old sci fi.

Mack Reynolds is back with another Section G book. This one takes place on a planet entirely run by an all female military caste, where the males are little more than serfs, and likely to just end up in a warriors harem. Guy Thomas has arrived in the guise of a representative of a mining company coming along to run some surveys to establish trade with other planets. In actuality it is his job to meet up with representatives of The Sons of Liberty an underground organization of males eager to gain a more equal standing.

Some of the characters feel a little flat and underdeveloped, and the plot kinda feels like he got confused on how to get to the ending, but at just under 200 pages, its not a bad read if your looking for something short and light.

Overall its not Mack Reynolds best work, or even his best in the United Planets Section G books, but certainly readable.
