This poem, like many of Frost’s, is about his observations of the natural world around hi. He lets us know that patience truly is a virtue, and often, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

This poem, like many of Frost’s, is about his observations of the natural world around him. The permanence and tranquility of the heavens, especially when contrasted to the chaos that makes up the human world, is reason enough to relax, and enjoy it. For me, his philosophical poetry, when done through the medium of simple observations, speaks volumes about his true insights into the nature that is within, and around, us all. 9. The Birthplace (West-Running Brook, 1928).

The poem is written in iambic tetrameter in the Rubaiyat stanza created by Edward FitzGerald who adopted the style from Hakim .

The poem is written in iambic tetrameter in the Rubaiyat stanza created by Edward FitzGerald who adopted the style from Hakim Omar Khayyam, the twelfth century Persian poet and mathematician. Each verse (save the last) follows an AABA rhyming scheme, with the following verse's A line rhyming with that verse's B line, which is a chain rhyme (another example is the terza rima used in Dante's Inferno The text of the poem describes the thoughts of a lone wagon driver (the speaker), pausing at night in his travel to watch snow . .

Frost wrote this poem at a time when many men doubted they would ever go back . The monumental artistic movement that changed poetry forever.

Frost wrote this poem at a time when many men doubted they would ever go back to what they had left. Indeed, shortly after receiving this poem in a letter, Edward Thomas's Army regiment was sent to Arras, France, where he was killed two months later. When Frost sent the poem to Thomas, Thomas initially failed to realize that the poem was (mockingly) about him. Instead, he believed it was a serious reflection on the need for decisive action. He would not be alone in that assessment.

Quippe ubi fas versum atque nefas: tot bella per orbem Tam multæ scelerum facies; non ullus aratro Dignus honos: squalent abductis arva colonis, Et curva rigidum falces conflantur in ensem Hinc movet Euphrates, illinc Germania bellum Vicinæ ruptis inter se legibus urbes Arma ferunt: sævit toto Mars impius orbe. Whate'er thy errors were, Be they no more remember'd; tho' the rage Of Party swell'd them to such crimes, as bade Compassion stifle every sigh that rose For thy disastrous lot-More than enough Thou hast endur'd; and every English heart, Ev'n those, that highest beat in Freedom's cause, Disclaim as base, and of that.

What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand. What kept him from remembering what it was That brought him to that creaking room was age.
