I was expecting the real reflection of the Ashram where the author stayed for sometime. After going through the contents of the book, I was disappointed. The author has spent most of her time and thoghts in describing the poverty, culture and wounded civilization of Inda instead of emphasizing the reflectionof the Ashram in question.

Belfrage (pronounced BELL-fridge) spent a month studying under an Indian spiritual leader to gather material for "Flowers of Emptiness: Reflections on an Ashram" (1981). Her Mississippi memoir, "Freedom Summer" (1965), based on her experience as a civil rights volunteer, was lauded for freshness and forcefulness.

Sally Belfrage (October 4, 1936 - March 1994) was a writer of 20th century non-fiction and an international journalist. Her writing covered the turmoil in Ireland, the . Civil Rights movement and her own memoirs about her life as the daughter of Cedric Belfrage and Molly Castle. She spent a month studying under the spiritual leader Osho to gather material for "Flowers of Emptiness: Reflections on an Ashram" (1981). Born in Hollywood, California, Belfrage became a social activist and world traveller. In 1965, she married Bernard Pomerance. They would have two children.

Granted, Belfrage will quickly drop her new name, Ma Deva Kanan (Sanskrit for Divine Wild Forest). Still, she never gets lost in private sensations, never loses sight of the great swarming mass of humanity outside the ashram gates. She will not, as other sannyasins do, wear orange robes for the rest of her life. She will not swallow her objections to Bhagwan's cult of the personality. In dozens of painfully vivid sketches, Belfrage evokes India as it looks to a guilty tourist-fascinating, repulsive, and ultimately heartbreaking. ""If you can be calloused enough,"" she notes sard.

Flag as Inappropriate. In the 1950s, both of her parents, Cedric Belfrage and Molly Castle, were deported from the United States as alleged Communists.
