The European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) brings together agricultural economists and others interested in the problems of the agricultural and food industries and rural development in Europe. Every three years the EAAE organizes a congress with a general theme in the broad field of agricultural economics. The XV EAAE Congress was held on August 29th – September 1st, 2017 in Parma, Italy under the title: Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems: Balancing between Markets and Society. The next congress XVI in 2020 will be held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The symposium is the first step in implementing the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management in terms of preventing and reducing harmful substances in soil as a way to maintain healthy soils and food safety in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, the symposium outcomes should provide scientific evidence to support actions and decisions to prevent and reduce soil pollution for increased food security and nutrition, and ecosystem services, and promote the remediation of polluted sites.

Although the concept of sustainable agriculture also includes environmental and so-cial aspects, the economic facet is still im-portant. Consequently, we compiled an indicator system on the agricultural sustainability based on statis-tical data, which describes four dimensions of agriculture sustainability (food supply, envi-ronment, economy, and society). The indicator system consists of 44 indicators and can serve as a basis for developing composite indicators. Based on the indicator system and the compo-site indicators of the performance of EU coun-tries, this study analyses economic dimension of EU agriculture (12 indicators).
