We received our new prayer book–Franciscan Morning and Evening Prayer. The project actually began back in 2002 under the auspices of the Franciscan Federation. Another aspect that makes this prayer book so special to us is its use of Franciscan sources, particularly in the antiphons and the closing blessings. The readings are also an added source of Franciscan sources. Each morning and evening prayer provides two readings, one from scripture and one from Franciscan sources.

Morning and Evening (Nynorsk: Morgon og kveld) is a 2000 novella by the Norwegian writer Jon Fosse. It tells the story of a fisherman: the first part of the book is about his birth seen from the perspective of his father, and the second part is about his death, when he revisits important places and moments from his life. The book was published in English in 2015. The book received the Melsom Prize. It was the basis for the 2015 opera Morgen und Abend with music by Georg Friedrich Haas.

When I was in formation with a Franciscan order, I asked them if they prayed the Liturgy of the Hours. They said that they did. Then they handed me this thing.

The Psalms are slaughtered. Absolutely slaughtered. In the name of inclusivity. GOD FORBID you refer to God as a man, right? You know, Jesus did call His Father "Abba" or "Daddy" ... not "gender neutral parental figure." Inclusive language is the scourge of the English language: it is repetitive (God, God's, God's self, etc.)and awkward.

This is not a valid replacement for the Church's official prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours. If you are looking for a Franciscan version of the Liturgy of the Hours, use the four volume set or Christian Prayer (the one volume edition) and get the Franciscan Supplement.

This is what happens when the mind of the world and its political correctness pollutes the mind of the Church.

And don't even get me started on the Magnificat and the Benedictus. Don't even get me started. Are women that sensitive that they need to be expressly told that they are included in salvation? Are we that insecure that we have to SLAUGHTER the poetic-ness of the Psalms and the original sound of the readings in the name of some worldly sense of "fairness?!"

Seriously. Get over yourselves, progressives. The Church has 2,000 years of tradition behind her. This whole inclusivity schtick in its present incarnation is about 40 years old and just as dated.

Also ...

It's bulky as all get out. I have Theology books that are meaty-er in content but not such a hulking behemoth. Don't think you can put this in your carry-on, purse, or pocket. The four volume LOTH is more streamlined. One volume of the LOTH is more compact (it fits in one hand as opposed to two hands). Christian Prayer is the like.

If you want to pray with the whole Church, pray the Liturgy of the Hours or Christian Prayer. If you want to include the Franciscan feasts, get the Franciscan supplement. Much better quality construction and more prayerful content.

This is a great book but the price that this person wants for it is way too much. It is done by the Franciscan Federation, Third Order Regular of the Sisters and Brothers of the United States. It was printed by the Courier Companies, Inc., Philadelphia, PA in 2009. Franciscan Morning and Evening Praise is set up similar to the Liturgy of the Hours (with a four week Psalter, Proper of the Seasons, Proper of the Saints, and Commons as well as many hymns. It is very easy to navigate. It is filled with not only Scripture but with Franciscan Readings. Unfortunately they are 'SOLD OUT'. I am not sure if they will doing a second printing or not - hopefully they will do another because the praise book is SUPER. THANK YOU TO THE FRANCISCAN FEDERATION brothers and sisters.
But this seller is way overpriced. So - those of you who have one - hang on to it!
