I have travelled, oh my son, in many cities, and I have seen the wondrous things which are in Egypt and in Babylon, which is in the direction of the Euphrates. I collected the best of their sayings from the first who were before me like the bees which gather from the trees and all kinds of plants; for from it there is the honey of medicine.

Dorotheus of Sidon, who appears to have lived in Alexandria, flourished in the first century AD. He wrote his Pentateuch (five books) on astrology in Greek, in verse. This translation, from 1976 by David Pingree, is from a fourth century Pahlavi (Persian) source. The first book is on the judgement of nativities. Book two concerns marriage and children. Book three is on the length of life. Book four is on the transfer of years, . Book five is on interrogations, . electional astrology. In this book are the earliest known astrological charts.

In book 2, chapter 20 of Dorotheus, a section on delineating the planets in each of the 12 places seems to have been introduced with a quote or a statement from Hermes Trismegistus, and it seems likely that Dorotheus drew some of the material that follows on the places from a text on the subject attributed to Hermes. Dorotheus of Sidon (Greek: Δωρόθεος Σιδώνιος, c. 75 CE - ? CE) was a 1st-century Hellenistic astrologer who wrote a didactic poem on horoscopic astrology known in Greek as the Pentateuch (five books). The Pentateuch, which was a textbook on Hellenistic astrology, has come down to us mainly from an Arabic translation dating from around 800 AD carried out by Omar Tiberiades (itself a translation of a Middle Persian translation from the original Greek)

Astrology Classics has been doing us the great favor or reprinting old classics that have either been out of print for many years or have never before been generally available to astrologers. Dorotheus of Sidon's CARMEN ATROLOGICUM is one of he oldest astrological texts in existence. The editor, David Roell, has made Dorotheus especially readable by re-setting the text in an attractive easy-on-the eyes font, but still keeping the original formatting with line lengths and pages identical to an earlier 1976 edition. There are a number of attractive tables and an index to the text.

For this edition the original translator's (David Pingree) Latin preface has been translated into English, and all charts are presented in modern format, ordered by date. The editor has noted how the actual charts differ from those given in the text, a very helpful addition for astrologers. There are also added tables of triplicities and terms, as well as the Dodecatemoria (12 fold division of signs). This edition of CARMEN ASTROLOGICUM is a must for anyone who wants to study and understand the origins of Hellenistic astrology. Hellenistic astrology forms the foundation row of building blocks for today's Tropical astrology.

Do you want to know how the astrologers of the Antiquity interpretated a chart? Did their methods differ from those developped in the 20th century by humanistic or transpersonal astrologers? Was its content comparable the corpus of the astrology of India.? Can their methods be used in the 21st century? Did astrology make real progress after the writings of Dorotheus? It is at times interesting for a practicioner to raise such questions. There are nowadays, after Dane Rudhyar, so few good theoretical astrologers... Highly recommandable!
