German World War II camouflage patterns formed a family of disruptively patterned military camouflage designs for clothing, used and in the main designed during the Second World War. The first pattern, Splittertarnmuster ("splinter camouflage pattern"), was designed in 1931 and was initially intended for Zeltbahn shelter halves. The clothing patterns developed from it combined a pattern of interlocking irregular green, brown, and buff polygons with vertical "rain" streaks

This book was a pleasant surprise. Who needs a book on US armor camouflage in WW2? It's OD green and white stars, right?

I bought it because it was on deep discount and also I was getting confused when building US WW2 models - what size stars went where on what tank at what time frame? Good news - there is a reason for confusion. Since there was a lot of variation over time, no real guidance until later in the war, many units did what they thought was best. In many cases, that meant painting out the stars which we good targets for the Germans. In some cases as with the M-18 Hellcat, you'll see three stars! Why? Why are some of the stars segmented and others not? Bumper numbers, serial numbers, unit crests are also covered.

In addition to the European Theater, this book covers the Pacific and US Marines use of camo & markings. Even less standardization there. 8 color pages assist the reader in seeing samples of the colors; the B&W photos are very clear and also provide excellent detail on what a tank in combat looks like vs. coming off the factory floor.

Mesko's book is a very good single source that clarifies the subject. I'd highly recommend this book for novices, although much nowadays can be found on line, this is a very handy reference book on US Armor.

The camouflage and markings carried by U. S. Army and Marine Corps armored vehicles is the subject of this 2005 64-page Squadron/Signal book by well-known military author Jim Mesko. If your interest is American vehicles that go clank in the night, you'll want to pick up this inexpensive, well-illustrated and interesting introduction to the subject.

After a seven-page summary of U. S. pre-war military vehicle markings, Mesko gets to the meat of the book, thirty-six pages devoted to Army markings and camouflage in the ETO. As is borne out by many photographs in the book, it's a misconception to generalize that all American vehicles were Olive Drab with white markings. Mesko has unearthed some surprisingly diverse paint schemes and markings that are real eye-openers. The book's final sections focus on the Pacific Theater with seven pages on Army markings and a 10-page overview of USMC vehicles.

U.S. ARMOR packs over 170 black and white photographs of a myriad of American military vehicles in its 64 pages; everything from a T3 Christie medium tank to Stuarts, Shermans, M8 armored cars as well as M29 Weasels, LVTs and M26 armored recovery tractors. Eight pages of color profiles by the always excellent Don Greer along with David Gebhardt and Darren Glenn round out the book.

Mesko's book, with its wealth of photographs and marvelous sideviews, is great value for the price. Modellers and armor enthusiasts alike will want to add a copy of U.S. ARMOR to their collection. Recommended.
