Otto Friedrich appreciated how powerful is this life story and he composed a biography worthy of his subject - Clover: The Tragic Love Story of Clover and Henry Adams and Their Brilliant Life in America’s Gilded Ag. .

Q: Clover led such a glamorous life in Gilded Age Washington. And Clover is taking photographs of him and their life together. Politicians, scientists, artists, writers-they all gathered at the Adams’ home on Lafayette Square for some of Clover’s Russian tea and her equally delicious gossip. So he’s writing about her, while she’s documenting her side of things, and they’re doing so in these wonderfully rich and roundabout ways. The clues had been there all along.

Henry and Clover seem both to have been quirky people, plagued with depression and self doubt, but they suited each other – both intelligent and curious. Yet Henry wrote a privately published novel whose main character appears to have been based on Clover, and the protagonist speaks of how unattractive she is and how much he prefers the company of a younger, more attractive woman. Henry Adams wrote a novel titled Esther the year before Clover died which is clearly based on her (and on a lot of other people he knew).

Clover, which is the tragic love story of Clover and Henry Adams and their brilliant life in America's . There ought to be a story here. At times, Mr. Friedrich seems to be working up a theory of sexual hysteria in Boston.

Clover, which is the tragic love story of Clover and Henry Adams and their brilliant life in America's gilded age, is pockmarked with such locutions as must have, may have, perhaps, probably, one can only suspect, it would have been difficult indeed for Clover not to wonder. We never know for sure. At other times, he flirts with feminist critique of 19th century New England, although Clover was hardly feminist and Ann Douglas has covered this territory much more thoroughly.

I go to visit her grave every now and then mainly to see the outstanding sculpture. It's nice to know more about her and life in general during that time period. I wonder what she would think of politics today?

Okay. Poorly written with not more than is available in other sources.

This is an interesting topic and very much a part of American history. However, the book proved to be more about the Adams family history than the subject of Clover and her sad life.
I was bored from the very beginning.

This is a frustrating book because Mr Friedrich was such a good writer...but I don't believe his heart was with Clover Adams...he seemed to like everyone else in the story better and yes, WAY too much Adams family and about the age itself ...the worse case was when he spent 5 pages on Henry James's motivation to write the Bostonians ...if I want to read about James, I'll get a book about him

I believe the TV program, The Adams Chronicles episode about Clover was popular and a book thought needed..
But you have to like your subject or at least be interested in them ...

We are allowed just lines from Clover's truly marvelous weekly letters to her father . When I read them in full, she had me laughing out loud...which I believe was what she wanted her father to do as he read them and why her observations are so sharp. She is trying to entertain her father...this reason seems to be missed by most
who think her too severe

Her photos are great and yet we don't even know when she began to take them! Mr. Friedrich calls it a fad

Mr. Friedrich also does not take Henry Adams to task enough imo for Writing " Esther " the devastating novel in which he blasts Clover's self esteem to Kingdom come( no pun intended ) ..I suggest her father's death was the last straw... but not the only cause for her death . If Adams had to write it, well that is one thing...but publish it? Why?
One cannot imagine the humiliation .

Yet, and yet... there are times when Friedrich does focus on Clover and he does a fine job .
