published by The Overlook Press. The Hotel Savoy, with its seven storeys, its gilded coat of arms and its uniformed porter, seems to me more European than any other hotel in the east.
published by The Overlook Press. It holds out the promise of water, soap, English lavatories, a lift, chambermaids in white caps, a chamberpot gleaming like some precious surprise in the little brown-panelled night cupboard; electric lamps blooming in shades of green and rose, like flowers from their calyx; bells which ring at the push of a button; and beds plump with eiderdowns, cheerful and waiting to receive.
Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth chose the Hotel as the setting in which they accommodated their stories and characters. It seems to have also been a generational preference but not solely. The younger Fred Wander also published Hôtel Baalbek.
The portraits of penniless chorus girls and lottery addicts are astutely done, yet the narrator, Gabriel, remains self-effacing to the point of transparency. Roth's writing got into gear with his saga The Radetzky March; with its enervating passivity, this early novella, translated by Jonathan Katz, seems.
Joseph Roth is one of the 20th Century's most outstanding writers. He stops temporarily at the huge Hotel Savoy, the great building in a gray and grimy manufacturing town, where revolution is in the air and workers are on strike. In this town, Gabriel meets at least 25 characters to whom Roth gives a name, an occupation, and a social status based on money. Most of these characters inhabit the six-story Hotel Savoy.

It was translated to English by John Hoare and published in 1986 through The Overlook Press.
Hotel Savoy leaves me with one question: if Joseph Roth had survived WWII in Paris, would he have written Hôtel Lutetia? PS: I have read it in French, unfortunately my German isn’t good enough to read books. I downloaded the original version and translated the quotes with the help of the French text.
In its massive Hotel Savoy, he m. In its massive Hotel Savoy, he meets a surreal case of characters - the dancer Stasia, a former factory owner obsessed with winning the lottery, and a host of cigar-puffing plutocrats and Slav revolutionaries - waiting in vain for something to happen: the return from America of a tycoon named Bloomfield. Like Europe itself in 1932, the hotel is the stage upon which characters follow fate to its tragic destination. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.
