Polyester fiber has become the fiber of choice within the textile industry, because of its physical properties, price, recyclability, and versatility, which offer a unique set of advantages unmatched by any other fiber. Since 1990, consumption of polyester fibers has grown at a sustained rate of nearly 7% per year globally. The polyester fiber market has grown to such an extent that it represents half of the total global fiber market (man-made and natural fibers).

The physical and chemical properties make these fibers particularly attractive for the production of clothing. The photocatalytic activity of both polycrystalline samples and thin films can be related to the method of preparation of the catalyst.

The Manufacturing Process. Polyester is manufactured by one of several methods. This process helps the fiber hold together during the later manufacturing stages. The one used depends on the form the finished polyester will take. The four basic forms are filament, staple, tow, and fiberfill. 3 After the tow is crimped, it is heated at 212-302°F (100-150°C) to completely dry the fibers and set the crimp. Some of the crimp will unavoidably be pulled out of the fibers during the following processes. 4 Following heat setting, tow is cut into shorter lengths.
