In later years Laumer also reused scenarios and characters from his earlier works to create "new" books, which some critics felt was to their detriment: Alas, Retief to the Rescue doesn't seem so much like a new Retief novel, but a kind of Cuisnart mélange of past books. In Book Two, Chapter 1, James allows Strether to set out his story, his role and function as an ambassador representing the interests of Woollett. Strether has a dialogue with Maria Gostrey, whose role in the book is almost the same as Ralph Touchett’s in The Portrait of a Lady or Fanny Assingham’s in The Golden Bowl. James gives Strether permission to move quite a distance from the very Woollett he represents. Nonetheless, Strether has to remain ostensibly serious as he explains things to Gostrey. She feels entitled to ask, Who in the world’s Jim Pocock? knowing that the very question implies that Jim, viewed from Paris rather than Woollett, is nobody, or less than nobody.

In his own inimitable way Jaime Retief goes from planet to planet solving problems along the way.

Keith Laumer's _Retief: Ambassador to Space_ (1969) is the fifth Retief book and the third Retief collection. If you want to keep a rough chronology in mind (these things can probably never be _too_ exact with the retief tales), it was preceeded by the novels _Retief's War_ (1966) and _Retief and the Warlords_ (1968) and was followed by the collection,_Retief of the CDT_ (1971).

_Ambassador to Space_ consists of seven adventures of Jaime Retief from _If_ between 1964 and 1967. Over the years, various artists had a go at illustrating Retief stories: Dick Francis, Virgil Finlay, Nodel... But the champion Retief illustrator was Jack Gaughan, whose pen-and-ink style was perfectly suited to the light, dashing stories. Only one of the stories in this collection was a cover story-- "Trick or Treaty," in the August, 1965 issue. But it was a spectacular, Halloweenish affair by Gaughan showing Retief and some centaurlike aliens dodging about some colorful off-world architecture.

The stories are: "Giant Killer," "The Forbibben City," "Grime and Punishment," "Dam Nuisance," "Trick or Treaty," "Forest in the Sky," and "Truce or Consequences". The first story recounts how Ambassador Pinchbottle refused to listen to Retief and consequently contracted to fight a dinosaur by the next sundown. Need we say that the Ambassador was not quite up to the task? We need not. In the second tale, the Groaci and the Blugs are planning a planetary takeover during a peace conference. (Is nothing sacred?) Retief enlists the aid of some scrappy denizens from an underground city to spike the plot. In the third story, the decisive Mr. Raisinger orders some rats poisoned-- which breaks an ecological cycle and leads to an onslaught of mud. Lots of mud.

The fourth tale involves some double crosses by the Groaci involving the uncalled-for present of a giant dam. In the fifth tale, it is some centaurs who are the bully-boys. They are delightfully put down by Retief and a family of carnies before they can start their invasion of the planet they had targeted for plunder. The penultimate tale is about a very strange gaseous planet with a most unusual ecosystem and an ambasadorial expedition that goes onward, upward... and out of control. The last story involves two sides in a Civil War enthusiastically fighting one another... until Retief reveals who their revered ancestors really were... and that unbeknownst to each other, the factions switched sides!

Fans of the Bad Boy Diplomat of the _Corps Diplomatiques Terrestrienne_ will not need me to recommend these stories, but I do so anyway. They are first class entertainment; and as I have stated elsewhere, the novelette is the ideal length for a Retief tale. They are a perfect balance of action and wit.

Perhaps it might be useful to close with a note about the spelling of Retief's first name. Early stories and books used the spelling "Jame". The Berkeley paperback that I used for this review uses this spelling as well. For a long time, that was the spelling that I used in my reviews. But later reprints, for reasons best known to God, jazzed up the spelling to "Jaime". This seems to be the more common spelling now, and so I have (somewhat reluctantly) modernized my spelling.
