This particular book in the Choose Your Own Adventure series is very nostalgic for m. Nicely atmosphered, indeed! The drawbacks of The Mystery of Chimney Rock are that the stories often end too quickly and also that it suffers on one or two occasions from assumptive inclusions.

This particular book in the Choose Your Own Adventure series is very nostalgic for me. I can still remember reading it in my classroom during break when I was in elementary school. These books are so much fun to read and great for reluctant readers too as the stories are quite short and contain illustrations throughout.

This was a series of young adult books, put out by Bantam, which were interactive–they were written in second person . Earlier in the week I gave you a rundown of Edward Packard’s The Mystery of Chimney Rock from 1979, which was in the series.

This was a series of young adult books, put out by Bantam, which were interactive–they were written in second person, and you, the reader, could navigate your own way through the story via the choices given at the bottoms of the pages. This sort of interactive fiction is well known now, but in the 1970s, when the books first appeared, it was groundbreaking.

There's a really funny standup bit by mpkins on his album "Freak Wharf" about how terrified he was as a kid of the book "Go Ask Alice," which his friends and siblings assured him would scare him to death, so he never.

All I can say is 'The Mystery of Chimney Rock' needs no revision whatsoever. I am 38 years old. This book scared me as a kid and
it freaks me out now. The artwork from Paul Granger is vivid and creepy. And while this type of story has been told many times, this
book does it in such a way that you get goosebumps.

I highly recommend the old school copy of this book if you can find it.

Kids love this book. I personally think it is the best of the bunch of choose your own adventures. It rarely fails to draw readers in to the adventure regardless of reading ability. In all honesty, it's not "classic" material. It's strength is its ability to quickly and easily spread the love of reading.

My husband and I used to read these as kids in the 80s. Great books for the new generation to get excited about all over again.

I am critical of most CYOA books, but this one is quite strong. The various branches are consistent with each other, and stuff you learn on one branch is consistent with other branches. You can't usually tell what an action will result in (e.g. go left or go right) but the results at least make sense in retrospect.

For a horror-themed book, most of the endings are pretty toned down. They look like they wanted to kill the character, but then have you rescued or escape at the last minute. However, they are at least definitive ends that make you feel like the story really just ended (as opposed to weaker titles where the supposed endings resolve nothing).

The branching factor is high enough early on that it really does drive you to commit to choices, and not just do a breadth-first search of the options. All in all well done, and it holds up over the decades.

This was one of my favorite all time books as a kid and I hear they re-printed it with a different name so I was happy to get this which is the ORIGINAL copy of the book as I remembered it!

These books are great for taking a trip down memory lane, yet the lane is short, pricey and not as exciting as you remember.

Classic choose your own adventure book. Exploring a creepy old house, that might be cursed!

My older sister used to read me this book when it was"new" in the early 80's. Still have that copy but it is very worn. Decided to buy a new copy to read to my kids.
This book really creeped me out when I was a kid, and the pictures are still creepy to me as an adult.

The story is pretty interesting for such short chapters.
