Though undoubtedly occasioned by the coming changes in the English translation, this volume provides a good, substantial overview of the sources, history and theology of the Roman Rite.

My only quibble with the articles is their propensity to overuse abbreviations: "EP" for Eucharistic Prayer, "MR" for missale Romanum, and on and on and on. It gives them a bureaucratic flavor they really shouldn't have.

It's good to have the Latin and English texts in a format convenient for review and study. It would have been nice to have the rubrics in red, but I suppose that would have increased the price.

The changes in the English translation are reviewed, phrase by phrase, in separate essays, which are critical without carping. Personally, I find the new translations marginally better than the old ones--I just wonder if they are worth all the sound and fury they have provoked. These essays do a good job setting out in detail the difficulties and unavoidable subjectivity of translation.

For all Roman Catholics pastoral leaders, yes, even bishops, this commentary on the newly translated Order of Mass is a "must read." The scholarship is impeccable. The evenhandedness of the writers who, I suspect, would have been much happier with the
earlier revised translation rejected by the Vatican is a witness to their commitment to the ongoing renewal of Catholic worship despite the roadblocks presented by Vatican directives in the past decade. This thorough commentary deals with every ritual unit of the Mass from a historical, theological and pastoral perspective. The trenchant analysis of the translation itself will put paid to all those presenting the new text as a more faithful translation.
