"This is a book about the most dramatic day in the history of the world, the day on which Jesus of Nazareth died. It opens at 6 P.M.â?”the beginning of the Hebrew dayâ?”with Jesus and ten of the apostles coming through the pass between the Mount of Olives and the Mount of Offense en route to Jerusalem and the Last Supper. It closes at 4 P.M. the following afternoon, when Jesus was taken down from the cross. . . . The fundamental research was done a long time ago by four fine journalists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. This is a historical account of the day Jesus was arrested, tried and crucified. I read this years ago when I still thought of Jesus as some sort of imaginary myth. This book set the story straight. All the facts, personalities and incidents are described and confirmed here. You will never think of Jesus as anyone but a real, gentle, tortured and self-sacrificial person again.

Amazingly written. One can visualize the land, the people, hear the sounds of daily life. You can't help but feel strong emotions throughout the book. You don't have to be Christian or Jewish to understand the truth of what happened. You simply become one with the people of that time. And you understand the feelings of the few that stayed with Jesus until the very end.
This book will stay with me for the rest of my days.

I read this book as a boy back in the sixties. I was fascinated with historical background on how Jim Bishop researched this to explain the mysterious. This is much better than the recent version ghost authored by Bill O'Reilly. Frankly Orally and company practically plagiarized from Jim Bishop as if they new research. I think with all the publicity I think people forgot that book was already out and told the story much better.

This is the most awesome book if you want to know about the culture at the time of Christ. It is a novel, but the author has done extensive historical research so that the parts that don't come directly from scripture (much of it does) are entirely believable and plausible.

This book by author Jim Bishop was first published in 1957 and represents an account of the last 24 hours of Christ. It is well written and was heavily researched in Jerusalem prior to publication. It is a moving and compelling work and though fictionalized in places it is a great addition to any Christians library, and a must read during holy week. I loaned my original book out but never got it back, but used copies can be found for pennies on Amazon. As the Centurion said at the crucifixion, "truly he was the Son of God!"

This is a well written and moving account of the last days of Jesus. The writer was a journalist who used his skills to describe these events in great detail. He-like all of us--had his point of view and took certain interpretations of the events. His writing style and knowledge of the geography, history, and customs of the times really make the events vivid. It was painful to read about scourging and the Roman way of crucifixion. This is an excellent book to read for Lent.

This was a good account, well researched and written of Christs last day on this earth.. Jim Bishop must have done 'piles' of research, as noted when he described the temple veil which split when Jesus died. The veil was so heavily constructed that it sounded impossible for it to split.

I was amazed at the research which went into this book, which renders a very good account of Jesus' last day.
The last sentences sum it up well:
"The two Marys sat with their backs to the stone. They loved him and, in their love, they missed the enormous triumph; the new promise; the good news. They did not even notice that the sun was shining."
