This was an astonishingly good little book. Catholic theologian Peter Kreeft is always interesting to read, and this sharp, punchy little book is no exception. At times he came across as a cross between G. K. Chesterton and C. S. Lewis, a comparison I'm sure he'd appreciate. The book is about how shocking Jesus is, how the mere mention of His name in conversation changes everything about that conversation forever.

Jesus Shock is the second in a series of short works on seminal concerns of the impact that Jesus Christ made in the world. The first work, The Philosophy of Jesus, explored philosophy in light of Jesus, rather than the other way around. The present work investigates the reception Jesus received both in His lifetime and continuously to the present time, not only from His enemies, but from His friends, a reception of shock, astonishment, even disgust.Jesus-Shock shows the reasons why to this day the name of "Jesus" stirs up controversy, even revulsion, in polite society. In the true spirit of ecumenism, it also points the way toward a true rapprochement among His modern-day disciples.

I happen to be one of those oddballs who destroys books when I read them. When so inspired, I have no issue underlining text, highlighting words, bending corners and writing in the margins -- to me, all fair game.

Here's the problem with Dr. Kreeft's new book: the margins are too narrow! To be fair, though, if the margins were six inches around on all sides, I would still be complaining. This book is THAT GOOD! I'm serious -- I have never read abook that ends up with more written words in the margin than typed words on the page. 'Inspiring' is a gross understatment. If I only had three books to take with me on a desert island where I was destined to live the rest of my life (in that case, Lord, Hawaii perhaps?), my food for the soul would include the Bible authored by God, The Utmost For The Highest written by Oswald Chambers and now Jesus Shock penned by Dr. Peter Kreeft.

My favorite couple of lines from his book?

"Those who meet Jesus always experience either joy or its opposites, either foretastes of Heaven or foretastes of Hell. Not everyone who meets Jesus is pleased, and not everyone is happy, but everyone is shocked."

How true that's been in my personal walk. For 42 of my 45 years I was negatively shocked by 'all things Jesus' -- the very subject of Him in conversation became a show stopper. "NEXT subject, please!" After God hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and brought me to my knees so that I might look up, I found Jesus (not that He was ever lost). He was a show STARTER.

Jesus cures unbelief. Jesus cures spiritual emptiness. Jesus cures alcoholism. Jesus cures emotional pain. Jesus cures loneliness. Jesus cures what ailes you.

Psalm 34:8 (New King James Version)

Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

BEWARE, though, for Christ makes life unpredictable upon exchanging 'my' will for 'Thy' will.

See, 'Thy will' does not ask you for your opinon or permission. Jesus cures boredom too. Follow the Leader and find surprising Joy. Hold on, you're in for the ride of your eternal life!

Dr. Kreeft's God-inspired (and Todd inspiring) book is a true treasure. An early CHRISTmas present. Dr. Kreeft, thank you for writing it. God bless you...MORE!

Yes indeed, this Christ character IS divisive, isn't He?

As for me and my house, the smart money's on Jesus.

This was one of the few books I've read in a long time that I couldn't put down after I started reading it. Kreeft's enthusiasm and love of God is infectious. Comparing this book to a spiritual defibrillator is spot on. This is a book I would not be afraid of giving to anyone outside of the Catholic faith. This book will make you think irrespective of your beliefs. Peter Kreeft is an incredible writer who has 1 foot in heaven and 1 foot on earth. Read this book and buy some for your friends, you will not regret it.

Every once in awhile, we may each come across a person who in some way is inspirational, and maybe sparks a bit of "...I wish I could be like....". Well for me, Peter Kreeft is one of those people.
Peter Kreeft takes an outstanding, empirical look at the impact of Jesus, upon anyone, and everyone. And of course, since society is a reflection of the collection of individuals, then the impact of Jesus on each of us, impacts society.
Simply, Peter Kreeft relates stories from the bible (in a rapid manner), as well as teachings of the Church to the message that is etched upon our souls. He raises one BIG question, that should be on the mind of all Catholics: Given what gift we receive in Jesus, why do we not respond?
Kreeft attempts to answer this question, and other ones as well.
The book is written in a light, quick hitting fashion, that allows you to absorb the message, and develop the understanding of the subject matter, by using clear language. He raises questions regarding for those outside of the Church, but for those who are within. Indeed, it may contain greater value for those within, if you are willing to honestly and objectively look at your faith as reflected upon by Jesus Christ.
You could read this book quickly....I recommend you take your time. Read a section, then think...and pray.

If you haven't read any Peter Kreeft, I strongly recommend his writing. He gets to the quick on any topic and explains it well enough for the average person to understand it. I was so impressed by this book that I have purchased several others. In this book, he describes how radical Jesus was in his thinking and how his message is so shocking to so many.

He points out how fortunate we are to have Eucharist, Jesus in every tabernacle, and what a waste for us not to receive Eucharist often.

If you truly wish to follow Jesus, this book will help you along the way.

Well, Peter Kreeft does it again. Using his brilliance in logic, Kreeft addresses the core teachings of Christ that inevitably "shock" the world. I was particularly impressed with the bluntess of his style; this is not a book for "lovey dovey" Christianity. Rather, it is a text full of truths and a wake up call. For Catholics, this book is a convincing account of why it's great to be home in Rome. For Christians, it is a narrative that will get you thinking about what it means when Jesus says "Take, eat, this is my Body." For non-Christians and those who question or deny the existence of God, the book will help you understand why Jesus is the ultimate contradiction of the times - and, God willing, why He desires to be part of your life as well.
Malahelm
Strap on your seatbelt. Wear a helmet, if you own one. If not, read this from a recliner or lying down. One other important point ... You will want to read this two, three times or more. Peter Kreeft is a terrifically gifted thinker. Most of his books go best with a cup of coffee and a lot of spare time. Jesus Shock, however, affords no leisure to the read. It is 20 gallons of theology stuffed into a ten gallon hat. It cannot be read slowly. It must be read full throttle. Because of this a mortal mind cannot keep pace. Thus, multiple readings are required. At 165 or so pages, it can be read through a couple times in two or three days.

Oh, by the way, it is a wonderful and inspiring work.

Got to go. Reading Jesus Shock again!
