Making Authentic Shaker Furniture - John G. Shea. The Wardleys and their few followers were not conventional Quakers. Chapter I. Shaker creed, customs, colonization, and industries. They had come under the influence of the French Prophets, or Camisards, who were driven from France because of the emotional disturbances their unorthodox preachings caused among the people. The Camisards prophesied the early return of God’s kingdom to earth - an idea which did not sit too well with the current French king.

The Shakers and Their Furniture

The Shakers and Their Furniture. Known derisively as the "Shaking Quakers" for their frenzied dances and trances during religious services, the Believers (as they referred to themselves) preached that the path to salvation lay in hard work, abstention from worldly pleasures, and constant prayer. They also practiced celibacy and a cooperative lifestyle, one in which all property was jointly owned. When families became part of a Shaker community, husbands parted from wives, and children lived separately from their parents.

I'm a fan of this author's (John Gerald Shea) books. They're older publications that are widely available and usually pretty reasonably priced.

The author somehow manages to overlap his material. Some of the same pieces furniture show up in different books. Interestingly, I've noted that for some of those pieces, the dimensions and drawings can vary between one title and another. Not sure if he simply refined the plans or did the drawings again and just arrived at different numbers on dimensions. In any case, not a big detractor, just something I've noticed.

He provides some general background on the types of furniture along with generally adequate plans for reproducing pieces. You don't get every build detail but there is enough information for a good start. Just don't expect a step-by-step how-to guide on how to build each piece.

Probably not a stand-alone book, but so reasonably priced that you can add it to your collection of Shaker reference books as an additional title.
