Comments to eBook Conquest and Crisis: Studies in Joshua Judges and Ruth
Monam
Let me start off by saying that I have read John Davis' commentaries on Genesis (Paradise to Prison) and Exodus (Moses and the Gods of Egypt). Both of those books were very satisfying and convinced me to purchase Davis' commentary on Joshua, Judges, and Ruth (Conquest and Crisis).

This commentary is more concise than his previous commentaries, and as such, it felt like John was moving through the text too quickly. While he does stop to explain and dissect some of the more interesting passages, at times it appeared he just summarized the text.

I also noticed that I didn't use my highlighter as much as I did with his previous two books, however, there still was plenty of small gems to find. For instance, concerning the destruction of Jericho's walls Davis goes over various theories and concludes, "It is better to assume that, by supernatural means, God Himself brought about the collapse of these walls. Otherwise, we have no way of accounting for the fact that most sections of the wall collapsed except those that surrounded the house of Rahab, for as long as Rahab and her family remained in her house, according to the agreement with the spies, she would be safe from the destruction that was to come to Jericho." (p.44)

Concerning the crossing of the Jordan river Davis takes note, "It might be noted that the Jordan was stopped on two later occasions in order to permit passage (2 Kings 2:8, 14). Are we to assume that two successive earthquakes occurred merely to permit the prophets to cross? With the facts we have at present, it seems wise not to attempt to provide natural causes for what appears to be a special act of God in behalf of His people." (p. 34)

Also, concerning the hailstorm that took place when the Israelites confronted the Amorite coalition Davis states, "There is no other way to explain this event than to regard it as a miracle, for it appears that the hailstones affected only the enemy and not Israel. A purely natural hailstorm would not be so selective!" (p. 76)

I appreciate that Davis doesn't try to force miraculous events to fit into natural phenomena when the text does not warrant such an interpretation. This book also contains much archaeological information since the author has personally been on several expeditions and served as Executive Dean of the Near East School of Archaeology in Jerusalem. I recommend this commentary for those who are conservative and believe the Bible is completely true in it's history.

The book was an older edition than what was indicated. Since the book has several editions, it somehow got mixed up or something
