For many Americans spirituality and business seem to be polar opposites: one is concerned with lofty questions of ultimate significance, the other with mundane matters of the daily grind. Yet over the last two decades the two have become increasingly linked, and as the barriers between them are broken down, many see this as a revolutionary shift in American business culture.

Lake Lambert III provides a comprehensive examination of the workplace spirituality movement, and explores how it is both shaping and being shaped by American business culture. Situating the phenomenon in an historical context, Lambert surveys the role of spirituality in business from medieval guilds to industrial "company towns" right up to current trends in the ever-changing contemporary business environment. Using case studies from specific businesses, such as Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby, he analyzes the enhanced benefits and support that workplace spirituality offers to employees, while exposing the conflicts it engenders, including diversity, religious freedom, and discrimination issues.

The American workplace today is experiencing dramatic upheaval and change. Spirituality, Inc. offers important insights into the role of religion in this transformation. With employees seeking new ways to strike a proper life-work balance and find meaning in their everyday lives, spirituality in the workplace is a trend that will become increasingly important in the American business landscape. Spirituality, Inc. provides a critical overview of this phenomenon that does not ignore the movement's many positive contributions to the workplace, yet does not overlook the potential for abuse.

Lambert (a friend) provides insight into the faith and work; social movement (based on the scholarship of Dr. David Miller, God at Work). Dr. Lambert's book offers a thematic overview of the movement. While many may think that most people leave their faith at home when they arrive in the workplace, Lambert's work suggests that whether implicit or explicit, faith is a vital aspect within the workplace that needs to be considered. His book is especially of note for educators, Chapter 5, gives special attention to how business educators can include faith into their classes and business programs.
Finally, if you read this literature, you will find that much of the literature is polarized - simple, ad hock advice, verses scholarly and well researched insight. Lambert's belongs in the second group.

This is interesting and useful if you're interested in religion and work or religion and capitalism (I've cited it in my own work), but beware: the book is implicitly guided by Christian theological concerns. If that's not your bag you might want to pass on this one.

Spirituality, Inc.: Religion in the American Workplace
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this informative, well-researched and documented book by Lake Lambert. The quality of the writing is very high because it presents the information in a sophisticated way but the meaning is easily accessible to readers at many levels. I consider myself to be a reader at the expert level and this book gave me a wide, yet incisive overview of what is happening in the workplaces of our time with regard to Spirituality. I was most interested in finding out how Spiritality is being used by Corporations and how employees find some kind of fulfillment through these spiritual resources. I purchased the Kindle version of this book and used the Notes facility to transfer what I thought was very useful information to my computer. In that way I am able to review the book through my notes about what made an impression on me in my first read. Thank you.
