While the NRSV might not be the most elegant translation of the Bible, and while the lectio divina guidance might be a bit stilted, this Bible does allow a prayerful meditation on scripture, both old and new testament.

I'm addending the following:

This Bible has charts for the three year cycle of Sunday readings, as well as, Lent/Triduum/Easter readings.

Binding photos added,also.

I received this Bible for my birthday and I really like it. The font is fairly large, crisp, and clear and easy to read, the print is dark and I don't see any problem with words showing through the pages like some other reviewers have mentioned. The reflections are very helpful and make reading the Bible a pleasure, since they provide a focal point. (Read, Reflect, Pray, and Act). The NRSV-CE translation is a flowing translation, which I also like. My only slight complaint about this Bible is that the cover is a little thin and flimsy, but not enough to affect my giving it a five star rating. This is a nice Bible and a wonderful gift.

Fr Lawrence Boadt wrote a book about Reading the Old Testament: An Introduction; Second Edition that served as a deep beginner guide for Christians who wanted some context into those books, without too much commentary. Towards the end of his life, he became the author of even shorter contexts to both testaments of the scripture and added them to this Bible. He took the time to write context, reflection, prayer and action steps for every page in this book. That’s why the title includes “Lectio Divina.” Some pages include two of these compositions. The value of this for someone encountering the entire Bible for the first time cannot be overstated. Having just enough context to each psalm, to each chapter in Job, to the genealogies, and the teachings of Jesus help a person like me who is trying to finish the entire Bible in my old age. I can almost picture Father Boadt, facing each chapter every day and coming up with those reflections, prayers and suggested actions to take. What a task! I, for one, am so glad he finished it. This is the Bible to own for the amateur scripture reader who also wants to pray while reading.

I had purchased this book after briefly seeing in it a bookstore. I loved the concept of being given a road map of how to use this prayer style. I am enthralled with the way it divides the Bible into manageable chunks, as well as the "Reflect, Pray and Act" reflections. I was always scared to try this prayer style, not certain of how much I should read, what I needed to reflect on; this solved this fear as well as added what I need to DO as a Catholic in response to the reading.

I am also excited that it offered a different translation than ones I am generally exposed to as a Catholic.

I have plenty of Study Bibles. This is an outstanding prayer Bible--exactly what I expect from the Paulists.

The thing I do not like about the book are the physical pages. They are extremely thin--so much so that the words from the page on the reverse AND the opposite page bleed through. It is nearly impossible to read as a result. I have taken to looking at the "Reflect, Pray, Act" section, and then reading the Bible texts in another one of my Bibles.

I would advise buyers to maybe look at the book in the bookstore first to see if the pages are as distracting to them as they are to me. I kept my copy rather than sending it back, though, because of reflections offered are nothing short of inspiring.

I would have paid the same amount if the Paulist Press had developed a book of the reflections as a separate text as well. Maybe they still will.

Love this Bible. I try to do a meditation every day. Oddly, even though I am not regular, when I read the next meditation, it is EXACTLY what I needed for that day. This was a Confirmation/First Eucharist present for my Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Highly recommend this for anyone who wants to make Jesus Christ and God a part of their daily lives. It truly transformed mine. I hope to use this in ongoing Bible Study.

I bought this Bible from the recommendation I heard from Father Dave on the Catholic Channel (The Busted Halo Show) as he is a Paulist Father and is close to the publisher of this Bible. He was spot on with the recommendation!

Pros: Good binding (mine is black - not blue as pictured), a good size to carry to church and yet the font is large enough and the pages are well laid out and the format is great. The prayer notes on the side columns are well written, very applicable and thought provoking.

Cons: I would have liked to see a red letter font for the words of Christ and it would have been good to have the OT references when quoted or cross referenced.

All in all, a great Bible and is a great tool to help when praying over Scripture!

Father Larry Boadt was a remarkable man, priest, Paulist, Old Testament scholar and this Bible which he opens by writing "How to use the Catholic Prayer Bible to practice Letio Divina" and "Discovering Lectio Divina Through Scripture" is, I think, remarkable. Virtually every page has commentary which walks you through where you are in the Bible and how to "Reflect, Pray and Act" for the particular reading. I gave this Bible to my four adult step children and my daughter and asked them to begin by reading the Commentary which opens the book of Proverbs - Read Proverbs 1."
