The Books of Amos, Ho. .The main divisions of the text are those provided by the New English Bible itself.

The Book of Amos is the third of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Tanakh/Old Testament and the second in the Greek Septuagint tradition. Amos, an older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, was active c. 750 BC during the reign of Jeroboam II (788–747 BC), making Amos the first prophetic book of the Bible to be written. Amos lived in the kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern kingdom of Israel. His major themes of social justice, God's omnipotence, and divine judgment became staples of prophecy.

It is ten years since it was begun. But, as Bishop of Winchester from 1903 to 1911, I had little leisure except during the annual summer holiday for consecutive literary work. The shortcomings of the present book, of which I am only too conscious, are partly attributable to this cause.

Comments to eBook The Books of Amos, Hosea, Micah (Cambridge Bible Commentaries on the Old Testament)
Coiril
I am writing my own commentary on Hosea and am up to chapter 9 of 14 chapters. I use two dozen commentaries in three languages and my own ideas. I am the author of 33 books. This is my 34th. I find McKeating's commentary scholarly, rational, very easy to read, and very insightful and I have so far quoted him over a dozen times.

This is an excellent pocket-sized commentary on three of the most important (and exciting) prophets. The texts are reprinted in full and McKeating's comments are excellent - an interesting view into the history behind these oracles. Hosea might not be everyone's cup of tea, but Amos and Micah have never been more relevant than now. It's a crying shame and dark disgrace that the church with its lectionary reading cycle continues the tradition of silencing these prophets.

This was the first of the Cambridge Commentaries I bought, and the series has yet to disappoint me. I can't say the same for any other commentary series except the Old Testament Library (a good next step, if you enjoy this book, is to track down the trilogy by James Luther Mays). Plus these are smaller and cheaper than Anchor or Word.
