Each book is introduced with a Narrative from Eugene Peterson, and I have often read parts of those narratives to my small groups as we study a book because they are so helpful. Now, for this particular Bible, the large print is just that, large and easy on the eyes. The text is layed out in normal book format, not two column like most Bibles, and the verses are numbered, although more in groups rather than individual verse numbers.
The Message of Proverbs. Eugene Peterson thought nothing of the kind. Each book is introduced with a Narrative from Eugene Peterson, and I have often read parts of those narratives to my small groups as we study a book because they are so helpful. He evidently sought to attempt to convey the writers' message (as inspired by the Holy Spirit) in just the sort of uneducated manner in which they spoke it in the first place.
The Message of Proverbs (Softcover). God's word right to the heart of the message!
The Message of Proverbs (Softcover). The writer, whose The Message: The New Testament in Contemporary English (NavPress, 1993) is a paraphrase of the New Testament, now applies the same method to the Old Testament book of Psalms. In a few places, the technique works; some of the rougher passages recover their harshness in the contemporary idiom, and the act of paraphrasing itself underscores the devotional value of putting the Psalms in one's own words. God's word right to the heart of the message!
