Still, Helyer draws together the major strands of Peter's life and writings in one book, which is its strength

He also looks at some of the non-biblical, pseudepigraphical writings of Peter. There were times when I wish this book examined some topics in greater depth. Still, Helyer draws together the major strands of Peter's life and writings in one book, which is its strength. He also rightly identifies major theological emphases of Peter, including the primary notion that Peter's theology is cross-shaped, and that the life of the Christian follows the way of the cross: suffering and glorification.

Who was Peter and what was his true stature in the early church? For Protestants at least, Peter seems caught between two caricatures . Author: Larry Helyer. ISBN-13: 9781844746002. The Life and Witness of Peter.

Who was Peter and what was his true stature in the early church? For Protestants at least, Peter seems caught between two caricatures: the rustic fisherman of Galilee and the author of two lesser New Testament letters. And in both cases he is overshadowed.

Larry Helyer's book on the life and theology of Peter fills a recognized gap in scholarship. Helyer's scholarship, fairness and devotion to the message of Peter all shine through in this volume.

Volume 38 - Issue 2. This is unsurprising given that Helyer has published such books as Exploring Jewish Literature in the Second Temple Period and perhaps more significant for the present work, The Witness of Jesus, Paul and John. Downers Grove: IVP, 2012. The warmth of his writing is noteworthy because in the field of Petrine studies, the Petrine material in the NT has been subjected to critical and quite clinical dissections for well over a century.

In comparison to Paul’s thirteen letters, 1 and 2 Peter often are overlooked. In The Life and Witness of Peter, Larry Helyer presents the New Testament’s portrait of the apostle’s life and theology

No figure in the New Testament is more interesting and yet understudied than the apostle Peter. Despite his rash decisions, he follows Jesus from the beginning, acts as the ad hoc leader of the Twelve, and stands behind much of the Gospel traditions. In comparison to Paul’s thirteen letters, 1 and 2 Peter often are overlooked. In The Life and Witness of Peter, Larry Helyer presents the New Testament’s portrait of the apostle’s life and theology. The first part of the book uses the Gospels, Acts, and portions of Paul’s letters to construct a historical narrative of Peter’s time with Jesus and in the early church.

And in both cases he is overshadowed by Paul. And in both cases he is overshadowed by Paul. In The Life and Witness of Peter, Larry Helyer seeks to reinstate this neglected and underestimated apostle to his rightful stature as an early Christian leader and faithful witness to Christ.

The Life and Witness of Jeremiah. The Life and Witness of Jeremiah introduces the general reader to the Hebrew prophet Jeremiah. As such it provides an overall sketch of his life and times and serves as a portal into his thought world. Jeremiah is among the most eloquent and passionate prophets in the Hebrew Bible. Thomas R. Schreiner, James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament.

Reconstructing Peter's life, theology and legacy from evidence in 1 and 2 Peter, the Gospels, Acts, Paul's letters, and texts from the early church, Helyer renders a great service for students of the New Testament. We are introduced to Peter the eyewitness who stands behind much of Mark's Gospel, Peter the preacher who lends deep credibility to the account of Acts, and Peter the letter-writer whose words glow with spiritual intelligence. Along the way we are rewarded with a careful analysis of prominent theological themes in Peter's letters. And we learn much about the traditions, legends and legacy of Peter in the post-apostolic era

Opilar
After finishing Helyer's 'The Witness of Jesus, Paul, and John', which I highly recommend, this volume caught my eye. I was not disappointed. Helyer presents a strong historical background for Peter the man and Apostle. Perhaps because there is less for 'modern critics' to analyze, there is less of the 'Experts now agree that Paul wrote X, Y and Z, but probably didn't write A, B and C', so to speak. I don't put a lot of stock in 'modern critics'. What the book does is give the reader a serious background in Peter, his work in the early church, his epistles and illuminates much of Mark's narrative. There are other books and certainly other authors plumbing the depths of Peter. But this is a good choice to add to your personal library. Recommended.

A much-needed book. Peter often gets lost and overshadowed by Paul. This book helped bring Peter back into the light and was a refreshing read!

While the author has obviously conducted a great deal of research, the book comes across as more of a PhD thesis. While full of information, it is not an easy read and should only be attempted by those seeking serious and scholarly pursuits. The addition of questions at the end of each chapter lends the book to Bible study groups. However, be ready for an intense scholarly discussion.

I am enjoying this book.

good quality well constructed

This book is inciteful to the apostle Peter's convictions, especially as it helped the early church develop its Christology along with Paul. Helyer displays various options on interpreting some of the controversial pericopes of the two letters attributed to St. Peter with fairness and rationale. This book also gives beneficial treatment as to how the early came to view Peter as the "rock".
