by. Bonar, Andrew A. (Andrew Alexander), 1810-1892.

1852 by James Nisbet and Company. Digitally prepared and posted on the web by Ted Hildebrandt (2004) Public Domain. SOME years ago, while perusing the Book of Leviticus in the course of his daily study of the Scriptures, the author was arrested amid the shadows of a past dispensation, and led to write short notes as he went along. Not long after, another perusal of this inspired book-conducted in a similar way, and with much prayer for the teaching of the Spirit of truth-refreshed his own soul yet more, and led him on to inquire what others had gleaned in the same field.

Bonar wrote his notes on Leviticus for his personal use, but was persuaded to publish them by friends. The author is always careful to make spiritual application, for, as he says, ‘The Gospel of the grace of God, with all that follows in its train, may be found in Leviticus. This is the glorious attraction of the book to every reader who feels himself a sinner

This is not a verse by verse commentary. Actually the plan of the book is to take the Levitical sacrifices, types, etc. and relate them to the true Sacrifice, Jesus Christ. You will delight in his explanations of the sacrifices and the priesthood. You will learn a great deal more about the atonement, and about the intercession of Christ our Mediator. ‘Very precious. Mr. Andrew Bonar has a keen eye for a typical analogy, but he always keeps his rein on his imagination, and is therefore safe to follow. He is a master in Israel’ (C. H. Spurgeon).

crazy mashine
good stuff!

Most Christians usually skip Leviticus when reading the Bible. They think it's too obscure, or that it belongs to an older audience (i.e. those under the OT Law). Bonar shows the beauty of this ancient text by showing how the shadows of the sacrificial system pointed to Christ and still help those under the New Covenant to see more clearly the beauty of what Jesus accomplished, both as our Substitutionary Sacrifice, and as our Great High Priest. Should be read by all serious Christinas.

Bonar's work on Leviticus is outstanding! He show's shadows of Christ on every page, and never fails to leave you with something to ponder. His ability to open up this book of the law and apply it to christians is remarkable. I'm sure the more "scholarly" crowd would much rather take apart each word and look for tenses and clauses, while Bonar does do some of that, his priority is showing Christ. And he does so gloriously. This one is not to be missed and has a permanent place in my library. I cannot comend this title too much, it is a treasure!
