Heart Trilby has no family. Like I, Kathleen Duey grew up dreaming about fantasy creatures including unicorns. The book is well written as it kept me reading the small chapter book until the end. My heart goes out to the character, Heart who experiences a less fortunate life. As I continued to read the book, I was praying life would change for her. It slowly does but sadly the book ends without the happy ending I was anticipating as the book doesn't end.

The text is set with wide leading and interspersed throughout with moody, evocative black-and-white illustrations. A cliff-hanging ending rounds out this portion of the narrative.

More suited to parents who read to kids. Difficult for kids to read by themselves ...
A lot of reviews here imply they are for 5-7yrs. I would place it more at 9 yrs but it depends on the kid. Best to make your own mind up.

Silly Dog

This is a lovely book for young readers. Even though the language is simple enough for the intended audience, the story does not "talk down" to the reader. Nice illustrations adorn each chapter. I only wish I had bought the whole series at one time; the ending is a cliffhanger!

if you are unsure about this series, i would definately recommend it. the writing is beautiful and the characters are so real. i read this as a kid from my library's copy and i just had to order it and re-read. good for younger people but also i am in my 20s and loved it again!

best book set yet..

My daughter (that usually hates to read) read this whole series when she was about 10 or 11. We got them through the library one summer and she would put her name on the list to get the books (that were already checked out) because she wanted to read them in order. I am in the process of ordering the series for my son's classroom. I read the series as well and I think it is one of the best book series I've seen in a long time. It is a captivating and sweet story that makes you cheer for Heart.
