The Little Wooden Farmer book. Thank you Anita Lobel. Okay, sure, so there is that stupid line about how the wife always agrees with her husband, but what do you expect from a book written in 1968? Everything is happy and then everything becomes absolutely perfect.

Dalgliesh's next major book was The Bears on Hemlock Mountain. She said this simple picture book was based on an old Pennsylvania tall tale. Illustrated by Helen Sewell, it is another Newbery Honor Book. Her third Newbery Honor Book came two years later, The Courage of Sarah Noble. The Little Wooden Farmer, Macmillan, 1930; reprint, 1958, with illustrations by Anita Lobel, ISBN 978-0-02-725590-4; First Experiences with Literature, C. Scribner's Sons, 1932, (college textbook)

1953 Newbery Honor Book  .

1953 Newbery Honor Book Or so young Jonathan is told by the grown-ups as he sets out alone over Hemlock Mountain. In 1707, young Sarah Noble and her father traveled through the wilderness to build a new home for their family. Keep up your courage, Sarah Noble," her mother had said, but Sarah found that it was not always easy to feel brave inside. The dark woods were full of animals and Indians, too, and Sarah was only eight!

The farmer and his wife have a beautiful house and barn but not animals. They ask the river boat man to find them some animals. He collects many and brings them to the farm where everyone is happy.

This was an old family favorite whilst abroad as a youngster - so delighted to have the opportunity to re-purchase, as our original is worn to shreds.

We got a secondhand copy of this from a friend and although the illustrations appealed to me immediately, it took a couple of reads to realize that the real beauty of this book is in the simplicity and clarity of the story. My children have listened again and again and still request it pretty frequently. The subject matter is timeless and easy for even small children to grasp and act out with toys; the tone is sweet without being condescending. Alice Dalgliesh obviously understands children's imaginative play very well and has written a story that inspires them to create their own little farms later. I'm keeping this one to read to grandkids one day.
