Christopher is both an important figure and a controversial one. It's encouraging to read biographies like this one, which do not paint him as a hero, but also not as a bad guy either. In the book, the author writes about how Christopher Columbus made a mistake and that we celebrate him even though he made that mistake. I like framing him (and much of history) in that way.

A simple biography of the Italian explorer who became the first European to discover the West Indies islands in three historic voyages sponsored by Spain's monarchy. This book talks about not only Columbus’s travels to America, but also how he was motivated to explore the seas from a very young age. In the end Weinberger writes that even though he made a mistake in calling the Americas India, we still honor him. This is a good point for elementary students because they need to know it’s ok to make mistakes; we learn and grow from them. It also shows them that if they really dedicate themselves to something, they can do it. schroem Sep 30, 2012.

I had hoped to read with my first grader about Christopher Columbus as Columbus Day approached. I didn't read this book to her. It has several inferences toward Columbus that I didn't find necessary.
The last page of the book almost sums up the Authors feelings...
"Columbus never did find all of the gold he wanted. But we remember him today as a brave sailor. And we honor him for his mistake!"
It makes Columbus seem smug, greedy and disrespectful of the generous natives who "...thought he must have fallen from the sky."

I went to our Public Library and found a better book on Columbus omitting the negative connotations and including more factual and unbiased information.

I guess I'm the counterbalance to the other reviewer. As Columbus Day approaches, I've been poking around looking for a picture book to read to my kindergarten son about Christopher Columbus. And I actually think this one is pretty good compared to the others we got. Whereas some of our other books start out with "Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy in 1451...," this one starts with him being born "more than 500 years ago." These differences are big to me, and I think "500 years ago" is a lot more understandable to my son than "1451." The whole book is that way, so it's kind of light on detail but very accessible. The book touches on some of the controversy of Columbus: "Columbus placed the flag of Spain on the island. He thought the land now belonged to that country. He did not ask the natives if this was okay." But that's all the deeper it goes. I think it's a good first introduction to Columbus. And I liked the illustrations.
