The sixth Sammy Keyes book is one of the most exciting yet, as Sammy and her friend Marissa decide to blow town and take a bus to the seedy, insane town o. When my mother recommended the mystery Sammy Keyes and the Hollywood Mummy to me at a Scholastic Book Fair, I thought to myself, This book does not look good; mysteries are usually never interesting books. Well, I thought wrong. The wonderful mystery written by Wendelin Van Draanen turned out to be one of the best novels I have ever read.

The elusive Lady Lana (a.k.a. Sammy’s mom) ran off to Hollywood nearly a year ago to get “discovered.” But when Sammy discovers that her mom has changed her name, dyed her hair, and told everyone she’s only 25, she decides Lana needs a little reality check. I mean, it’s one thing to have her mom ditch her. But it’s another to find out she’s created a life for herself where Sammy can’t possibly exist. But Hollywood is a shock. Everyone is pretending here. No one is who or what they seem in this starlet-eat-starlet world. So when a woman is killed in the room next door, Sammy’s hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t have a motive . . . including her own mom.

I am a sixth grader. I have recently read this book for a book report. For the most part I like it. I like it because it has a very good mystery and twist. This makes it very unpredictable and exciting. It is also has a good ending and conclusion. The one thing I didn't like was that the book took a long time to unfold its self. Sammy Keys and the Hollywood Mummy is a murder mystery, about a girl named Sammy who visits her mother in Hollywood. Little did she know she was about to find a totally different person.

Sammy slept over night at her mothers Hollywood home. When they woke up in the morning her mother's friend, LeBrandi, was dead.

Sammy can't help but think that her mother might be the next victim or maybe the suspect.

Marissa, Sammy's best friend, came to Hollywood with her and is now going to help her solve the mystery. The first type of clue they find is an empty bottle of sleeping pills by LeBrandi's bed. They obviously expected that she took to many and tried to kill herself. The second thing that was found was a brooch. It was large gold, oval pin with a red stone in the middle. There are still many other things to be found and uncovered by Marissa and Sammy.

In this sixth book in the SAMMY KEYES series, Sammy decides that she has to hop a Greyhound bus for Hollywood, pronto. Her mother Lana is there, you see, still trying to become the "Big Star." But in Lana's search to be discovered, she has lost all touch with reality. You know what she gave Sammy for Christmas? A fuzzy, soft, angora sweater. Pink. Is that out of touch with reality or what? It would go great with Sammy's high-tops, wouldn't it? Then, when Sammy's grandmother visited Lana in Hollywood, she found out Lana had changed her name --- to Dominique Windsor. On top of which, the new Dominique told everybody that her own mother was really her grandmother --- and she tells Grams not to say anything about Sammy; nobody knows Dominique/Lana has a 13-year-old daughter. How could she those things? She's knocked a good 10 years off her age, saying she's only 25 years old, now.

Well, denying Sammy is one thing. But when Sammy's mom denies her own mother, Sammy and her friend Marissa hop the Greyhound after school on a long, three-day weekend to go reacquaint Lady Lana with some reality. They discover that Lana/Dominique has gotten a phony driver's licence, with a phony birthday on it. She has had phony press clippings made, with phony acting credits. She wears peach satin robes, and she's bleached her hair blonde. She's living in a mansion that looks like the Egyptian museum, and there are mummies everywhere. Dead mummies. Even live mummies, if you can believe that. And Sammy's mom, otherwise known as "Peachy Bleachy," is up to her ears in big trouble, but she doesn't know it. She thinks her only problem is Sammy showing up, and she tells Sammy that she and Marissa have to hop the bus right back to Santa Martina the very next day.

Only thing is, the very next day, somebody who looks just like Lana is found murdered in Lana's bed. The bed the victim had traded with Lana so Sammy and Marissa could sleep overnight in a larger room. Creepy? Yeah. And the museum they live in is full of people who had motives to do it. Even Lana had a motive. The dead lady was competing for the same big role, which could have been the big break both of them needed. And just when Sammy was awakened by loud poundings on the wall between the two rooms, at 3:30 in the morning, Lana was gone. She said she was in the bathroom taking aspirin for her headache.

Is Sammy's mom a murderer? Or lucky to still be alive? If somebody was really trying to kill her and missed, will the killer try again? And who, besides the victim, could want her dead? How is that phony driver's license going to haunt Lana? Why is it very bad news that "Dominique" is only 25 years old and has a brand-new birthday? Bet you can't guess. But you will sure want to find out.

Well I don't know if you could tell but the main character of this story is Sammy Keyes. The main character (Sammy Keyes), her mother moved to Hollywood so she could pursue her acting career. She tries to find a good job in Hollywood, California. Her mother Lana Keyes lives in an apartment sort of thing with fifteen or sixteen other people, Lana's roommate LeBrandi was killed and Sammy is doing everything to figure out who killed her. She questions everyone and nobody can be trusted. She will be as sneaky and nosy as she could possibly be. Nothing stops her. The genre of my book is fiction.
I think it was a good book because it keeps you turning the pages and guessing what is going to happen next. I recommend this book to anyone that likes mysteries because through the whole story you are wondering who the killer is and what is going to happen next. Like I said people who like mysteries would really like this book probably from ages nine to 14 or 15 maybe. Well pretty much anyone though. Almost every paragraph ended with a cliff-hanger because you had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. This book was not boring at all because of all the parts in the story that made you wondering what were going to happen next.

Wendelin Van Draan once more draws us head first into the world of Sammy Keyes; thirteen year-old detedtive--unofficially of course. Sammy's mother ("Lady" Lana) left her to stake out success in Hollywood and Sammy has spent the last years with her Grandmother. However, Sammy is sick of waiting for her mom to get back and decides to do something about it. But when she arrives, Sammy is shocked to discover that her mother has shed 15 years off her age, changed her appearance and her name. But now that "Lady Lana" is "20" again, it would be rather suspicious if she had a 13 year old daughter, and Sammy's mom is all for sending her home on the next bus only to forget about her again. But in the midst of all this, one of actresses living in the same acting agency as Lana is murdered; suddenly, Sammy's mom is a suspect and a target and its up to Sammy to solve the twisted mystery of the Hollywood Mummy.
Okay, so this book isn't as "grasping" as the other books. In some ways, it lacks character developement and is overloaded with plot. In other words, we don't know enough about all teh characters to take a deep interest in all that they are doing. Still worth reading for fans of the series however. If you haven't read teh other books, I suggest going back and reading the first one; Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, which was much better.
Happy reading always! -Lia
