Lydia Maria Child, born in 1802, was an American writer and teacher who fought for women's rights and the abolition of slavery. In about 1844, Child penned the lighthearted verses about the joys of visiting her extended family as a child. Born six weeks early and with a paintbrush gripped firmly in her hand, Wendy Edelson is happiest when painting. It has attractive illustrations that will appeal to the reading adult as well as the listening child.

I ordered the board book so got the traditional poem with woodcut illustrations. It was obviously set up north so I wasn't bothered by the ice fishing or skating or even the sailing, although it was a little weird for winter but people do have to eat and travel. The different illustrations show the different scenes the family is passing by on their way to their grandparents house. It would be boring to just show a sleigh in the woods. The board book was larger than a typical board book so I was pleasantly surprised by how well we could see the illustrations.

As a kindergarten teacher many years ago, I ordered a copy of this book and read it to my class every year. After having my own children I read this to them every Thanksgiving. Unfortunately my copy was ruined. I'd been looking for a long time to replace it and was thrilled to find it on Amazon! I'm so happy to have this in my house again!

I ordered the woodcut illustrated version pictured here but I got the modern day, cartoonish version instead. Totally unacceptable swap! I could not read it to my class after teaching them the song because the "modern" version did not match the lyrics.

Even though this has outdated words and pictures, as earlier stated, it also has a bunch of verses, which is the thing my toddler likes the most. If you're just in it to sing the song and enjoy that, this is a great book. And I bought it because it includes the sheet music so we'll be able to play along on the piano.

I sought out specifically this version of the book, and received a completely different one with terrible illustrations. I would give the product I ordered 5 stars, but I didn't receive it!
Rainbearer
Beautiful illustrations. Classic song/poem.

Kids just shriek with laughter when they aren't busy singing, and (most important to their music teacher) they remember the song later because they had such fun learning it. They beg to read this book again and again, but I only do it at Thanksgiving, so it's a big treat. ;-) Many thanks to the illustrator.
Loved it! We read it as a family at Thanksgiving and then sang the song. It was a hit!
