Patricia Coombs (born in Los Angeles, California, July 23, 1926). She is the author and illustrator of many children's picture books, including the popular Dorrie the Little Witch series. Of her childhood, she says, ‘I was forever being told to get my nose out of a book and go outside. As a result I ended up reading in odd places where I wouldn’t be noticed-behind my brother’s mice cages, under lilac bushes. The smells of mice and lilacs to this day evoke certain stories.

The final book in the series, "Dorrie and the Haunted Schoolhouse", was published by Clarion in 1992. Her poetry was published in various literary magazines. The first children's story, "Dorrie's Magic" was published in 1962. It was inspired by and written for her two daughters, as were the following twenty-eight books.

From the treetop, though, Dorrie overhears the Halloween Demons plotting to snitch the Sorceress's master book of magic recipes, and so instead of being scolded about the costume she ends up heroine of the day, not only.

From the treetop, though, Dorrie overhears the Halloween Demons plotting to snitch the Sorceress's master book of magic recipes, and so instead of being scolded about the costume she ends up heroine of the day, not only saving the book and the Sorceress, but finding the one long-missing recipe in a substitute costume culled from the Sorceress' closet. This ends with a goodnight kiss and a flickering bedside jack-o'-lantern, and we couldn't think of a better summation of the formula that has kept Dorrie flying all along.

It was Halloween, and Dorrie was ready for her first flying lesson, but her mother said, "You're too young to fly. Maybe next year." The Big Witch was busy fixing a princess costume for Dorrie to wear to the Halloween Pageant for the Great Sorceress. But flying had more appeal for Dorrie than being a princess and learning to curtsy. If no one else would teach her, she just might have to teach herself. Her awkward attempt to fly put her right at the center of a plot by some Halloween demons. From her first encounter with the demons to the moment when the Big Witch blew out the candle in Dorrie's bedside pumpkin, the little witch had one of the most exciting Halloweens ever.

Our daughter is now 2 1/2 years old and she loves the Dorrie books. She won't go to bed without having one read to her. I'm sure she is too young to understand the whole story but there are just enough illustrations for her to ask questions and point at the things that she does understand.

Great series. Will be buying more.

Dorrie books were always a hit when my adult children were small. I highly recommend them.
