In 1941 the Yankees soon found themselves in one of those unforgettable slumps that seem impossible to get out of. Joe DiMaggio, otherwise known as the Yankee Clipper and "Joltin' Joe," stepped up to the plate on Thursday, May 15, to start one of those amazing streaks that would keep his fans counting the numbers. He "stoked a base hit off Chicago White Sox pitcher Eddie Smith" that would begin "the Streak," and pump up the team and Yankee fans across the country. On the same day Ted Williams, the Splendid Splinter, started stoking base hits and not only pumping up the Boston Red Sox and their fans, but was pumping up his average.

As the season continued, Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak continued while Ted Williams stopped on "June 8 after 23 games." The hits kept coming for Joltin' Joe and people were so excited the talk of the day was whether or not he'd smacked that ball. Even Les Brown and His Orchestra had a song about him. "From coast to coast, that's all you hear / Of Joe the one-man show. / He's glorified the horsehide sphere, / Joltin' Joe DiMaggio." The men would meet in a Boston doubleheader, but there were a couple of questions that would remain unanswered until the end of the 1941 season. How long would Joltin' Joe's fabulous hitting streak continue and would Ted Williams end the season with a .400 average?

This is a fabulously fun rendition of the record-breaking season that Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams had in 1941. The beginning of this book briefly starts out by talking about how baseball fans know their numbers. The numbers that were created in 1941 were amazing and are still standing to this day. I loved the way the book was presented. I didn't perceive it as a rivalry, but rather a portrait of two men striving for personal records while subtly supporting the other man. Dom Dimaggio, Joe's brother, was a Boston Red Sox player who told Ted to "Keep it up, and you'll hit .400 for the season!" There are several moments that the reader will feel the tension and excitement of the game, a factor that adds to the interest of the book. The artwork is detailed, hot, exciting, and meshes well with the tale. If you have a youngster who is a baseball fanatic, this is one book you might want to add to your list!
