Jessie Haas (Author), Jos. A Smith (Illustrator). So I knew they'd love this book, by Jessie Haas, who also lives in my neck of the woods. The story is sugary sweet (pun intended) and the graphics are just beautiful.

And so will children, who will sense the respect for life in Haas's quiet story. Smith's olor paints, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils-meld well with the text. Of particular note is his skill in capturing the changing light as the day passes over the lush countryside, and the varying perspectives from which each scene is viewed.

Hurry!" Rain is coming and Nora and her grandparents worry that the rain will come before the grass is dry and the hay can be gathered into the barn. In this fourth picture book about Nora, Gramp, and Gran, Haas (Unbroken, 1999, et. captures the urgency and worry as well as the joy of living close to the land. Nora drives the horse-drawn haytedder, around the field: "The forks of the tedder kick like dancing legs. They kick the grass high in the air and turn it over so the sun can dry the underside.

This story showing the extended family picking up hay in the old fashioned way is wonderful and demonstrates to children how things used to be. The back to basics rhythm of the horses pulling the hay tedder and the wagon is tangible to the kids. The drawings are beautiful and the text is just right for the age group. Pretty to read but not too difficult to understand.
Ballagar
Told in few words with Joseph A. Smith's lovely watercolors, a girl helps her grandparents bring in the hay before a summer storm.

Rebeccasreads highly recommends HURRY! for all city & country kids & their parents. You will relish this old-time tale, simply told.
Oparae
My children, homeschooled, age 4&6, love this series of books. So sweet and wholesome. Highly recommend No Foal Yet, Mowing, and Sugaring as well.
