I have used this book for years with my 7th grade readers. It offers hope to students who share the main character's life experiences, and it offers understanding to students who have never had to peer across the tracks to the people living in the shadow of the garden on the other side. I see something new each time my students experience this literary unit.

I love this book, always have, wanted a new copy, but I’m super annoyed that it came all bent up. The book itself is a must read and has stuck with me since I first read it in 7th grade (I’m 35 now).

This is the last time I buy a paperback via Amazon. The cover, the pages...all bent up. Annoying.

When I taught junior high school English, I often recommended this book to "make-me-read" students as they couldn't help but get caught up in the story line. Unfortunately, I am sure some students identified with Georgie's sad situation much too well; however, they had to be encouraged and reassured by the book's conclusion. The theme of this book is building trust, not just from Georgie's viewpoint but also from the perspective of Robin, Eddie, and especially Mrs. Harper. I recently ordered the book from Amazon for a gift and had to reread it just one more time before I wrapped it.

I first read this book when I was in 8th grade, at that time this book was very insightful to my own family life and child abuse. Georgie is someone young people can relate to, I highly recommend this book as a book that should be read in schools by children between 5th and 8th grade.

As an adult, I have re-read it and still find it touching, moving and insightful. If you are a parent or interested in Child Psychology (or a person who is involved in childrens lives on a daily basis), this is a MUST READ BOOK.

So sad. Fiction that parallels non-fiction. I cried the first time I read it. In the classroom, it brings about all kinds of dialogue among the students. Have students read this and then read 'A Child Called It' and compare them.
