Hans Christian Andersen was born in the town of Odense, Denmark, on Tuesday, April 2, 1805. Hans and Christian are traditional Danish names. Andersen’s father considered himself related to nobility. The Brothers Grimm (German: Die Brüder Grimm or Die Gebrüder Grimm), Jacob (4 January 1785 – 20 September 1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (24 February 1786 – 16 December 1859), were German academics best known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales, which became popular. I put Grimm and Andersen together because they are nearly contemporary, and they embody opposite approaches to fairy tales . the only book i kno by andersen is the little mermaid, and let me tell u it is nothing like the movie.

I put Grimm and Andersen together because they are nearly contemporary, and they embody opposite approaches to fairy tales: collecting them vs making them up from scratch. Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales are like exquisite jewels, drawing from us gasps of recognition and delight. Andersen created intriguing and unique characters - a tin soldier with only one leg but a big heart, a beetle nestled deep in a horse's mane but harboring high aspirations. Each one of us at some time, has been touched by one of Andersen's Fairy Tales.

I had Googled some Honor Appleton illustrations and loved them. Unfortunately, none of her gorgeous paintings are in color in this book and some do not translate well to black and white reproductions.

The sanitized, fluffy, happy ending Disney versions have removed the heart of these stories. Now an adult, I have been studying all sorts of fables on my own - Charles Perrault, the Grimm Brothers and Aesop. If you have no faith, you will not like these tales. If you don't like stories with obvious moral content, you will not like these tales. Having read all of them, I must say that Hans Christian Anderson beats them all in spades. The Little Mermaid" and the other classics are so much better in writing than they are on screen, as is so often the case.

HarryPotter2875 (new). Hans Christian Andersen vs the Brothers Grimm. Epic Fanmade Rap Battles of History 5 years ago 5 years ago.

The world of Hans Christian Andersen is seen through the eyes of children. There is the everyday wonder of an ugly duckling being transformed into a swan; the puffed-up Emperor being fooled by his own importance; the tender tragedy of a little match girl; the upright honesty of John rewarded by his traveling companion. By bringing true feelings to these stories, Andersen s tales have become part of universal folklore. PLUS, some of the most enchanting fairy stories of all time from the brothers Grimm; a world of fantasy, hope and good fortune where the princess meets and marries the right prince (even if he was once a frog), and where the cruel witch, the arrogant wife and the greedy wolf get their comeuppance. It is a magical world which we must all inhabit at one time in our lives and which are as important in this computer age as ever before.
