7 Great German Books For Beginner And Intermediate Learners. Of course, at a beginner or intermediate level, you probably don’t want to start reading books by German philosophers. Instead, try short stories and other easy books. This book contains 280 pages of unconventional German short stories that are perfect for A1-B1 levels. Each of the stories in the book is designed to be fun and engaging with just the right amount of new vocabulary. We don’t trust ourselves to apply the same shortcuts we would use when reading in English.

I recommend this book for you German: Learn German For Beginners Including German Grammar, German Short Stories and 1000+ German Phrases.

While this book was probably intended for kids and teens, it works well for adults, too. As a tutor of German and Spanish (they have the same book in Spanish), I find that my beginning students of all ages enjoy these brightly colored, amusing illustrations and the simple, practical text. A complete beginner can stick with the text as printed. With the help of a tutor, a somewhat more advanced student can discuss the situations pictured, the names of the many objects on each page, his or her own activities, and more. The audio CD is a great addition. To sum up: This book is a very fun introduction to a complex language.

Wonderful book! I already know some German and I bought this to teach my kids before they went to DE for the summer. I love how the pictures went with the dialogue, making it easier for my kids to understand (and when to use) the language. It also helped refresh some of the German I’ve forgotten since I’ve last spoke it! I recommend this book to both novice and anyone needing a basic refresher!

As an American, there are a few pronunciations that were a little bit different (given that the author is English), but aside from that, this book is great. We're studying up for a trip to Italy as a family (10, 13, 50, 54) and this is the perfect book for us. It even has a CD that has the lessons on it. Basic phrases, basic conversations, number, pronunciations, etc.

It's a gift for my brother since he wants to learn German, looks like it'll teach him the basics. Only problem was that I guess I thought I had bought a new book and not a used one... uh i mean I should've expected the quality since the seller is "Thriftbooks" Um I mean the pages are kinda stale and the spine is kinda torn and there's some random writing in it. I'm not too upset I'm just worried what my brother is gonna think about it. But it arrived on time so that's pretty good!

Very good for beginners, but I think it needs to include pronunciation with each "cartoon" and a translation.
Love Me
This really is the best book for beginners and it's a such a fast and fun way to learn the language. I have bought so many of these books for friends, and my private students (the French and Spanish versions too), and they have all found them very helpful and not too heavy going. Everyone learns better with pictures and the ones in the book are amusing and informative. There are so many other books to choose from but this one is by far the best for immediate self learning. Suitable for any age from 4 up to 84!! It really is. If you just want to learn a smattering of German then this is the book to buy. It will teach you so much in such a short space of time and you can prepare yourself to immerse yourself into the German culture and make good acquaintances right away. Always important to make a good impression in a country you are visiting, and to learn common courtesies :o)
It's so easy
My son is just starting to learn German. This seems like it will be perfect for him. Cute illustrations with basic conversations a person would need to know.
I purchased this book for an Italian class at the local senior center. The instructor said the book should include a CD which provides pronunciation and practice help. However when my book arrived, there was no CD. Also, I ordered it from a domestic provider and expected it to be shipped within a few days, but it took more than a week to arrive. In the book itself, the lessons are arranged in a somewhat scattered and disorganized fashion. And some important basic words have been omitted requiring many queries to the instructor. On the plus side the practice exercises are challenging and fun, somewhat like word puzzles.
