People often think about giving it all up and just moving to a farm.

Readers see the earth from the moon; moving down into the atmosphere, the North American coastline comes into view. That becomes an aerial view of a landscapemountains, rivers, fields, and a town. The approach to a town is shown in a series of rather realistic images that look like photographs taken from the window of an airplane coming in for a landing.

If you were an astronaut traveling far out in space and you looked at the earth, what would you see? A small ball in the huge black universe. My daughter loves this book. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 19 years ago. As an elementary school librarian, i have found this book to be a great hit with students of all ages. It gives a bird's eye view of the earth from first space and eventually down to a magnifing glass in a child's hand.

Steve Jenkins Author Study: After studying Steve Jenkins' amazing nonfiction picture books, students created their own Jenkins-type collage out of paper and write a fact about it from their book. Will catch the eye of a boy that might not like to read, but enjoys science and creatures. This article highlights several books authored by Steve Jenkins.

In this wordless picture book, readers first see Earth as the astronauts do, as a small ball in the black universe. As the point of view moves gradually closer, we can see continents and oceans, then the East Coast of the United States, then a town (an imaginary one), until, finally, we are looking through a boy's magnifying glass at a ladybug. In his remarkable and detailed cut-paper illustrations, the artist takes us on an amazing journey from outer space to a young boy's front yard.

My son is 3 years old & he absolutely loves this book. It has started him asking questions about different perspectives, which, before I do not even think he realized. He now asks about bugs and the planets, etc. The illustrations are magnificent. The only thing? I wish it were hard cover. :)

I happen to be a fan of wordless books, and this one is very interesting! Sort of a low-tech version of Google Earth.

Cute idea but the illustrations are Kind of boring. Crazy. I normally love Steve Jenkins. This one just wasn't a hit with us.

My first graders absolutely LOVED this book!

This book is great when you are studying maps, the earth & works really well with Google Earth as well. This wordless book is wonderful for the elementary school child, which is how I use it!

A great lesson would be to discuss details, zooming in while writing. Sometimes it's called helicopter-writing, when students hover around the main idea. Students often have a hard time focusing on details. With just the use of these illustrations, teachers can get their point across. The pictures zoom in from a view of Earth, all the way down to spots on a ladybug. Very effective!

I purchased this book to use with second and third grade students while teaching geography. I love that it provides a "birds' eye view" of maps, which is a difficult concept for most kids. The illustrations are exquisite! I purchased an additional ebook edition so that I could provide a zoomed-in view of the magnificent art work in the book. The formatting, however, is wonky. The pictures cannot flow in this format, which is especially important in a wordless book. Invest in the printed book, but skip the ebook version.
Wonderful resource to use with young children to explore space and earth in relation to their own position in the world!
The graphic art images captured a complex concept in a simple way that is child friendly to further promote their curiosity and interest.
